Best 7 days Between Neckar/Heidleberg to Rhine/Mosel to Trier

Which of these options sound like a better use of time? I am considering many options for walks, biking, boating, castle visiting, festivals in the Rhine/Mosel. But, will we get enough of a taste of the area in the 2 days each per Rhine/Mosel allocated in Option A or should we skip the Neckar/Heidelberg option and just follow Option B? Suggestions appreciated. We will be traveling 6 Sep to 13 Sep. Danke!

Option A

  • 1-Fly into Stuttgart, Rent car, Drive up Neckar Valley, Stay in Neckargemuend
  • 2-Neckargemuend/Train day trip into Heidleberg
  • 3-Drive to Bacharach/Rhine
  • 4-Bacharach/Rhine
  • 5-Drive to Cochem/Mosel
  • 6-Cochem/Mosel
  • 7-Cochem/Day trip via train to Trier

Option B

  • 1-Fly into Frankfurt, Rent car
  • 2-Drive to Bacharach/Rhine
  • 3-Bacharach/Rhine
  • 4-Bacharach/Rhine
  • 5-Drive to Cochem/Mosel
  • 6-Cochem/Mosel
  • 7-Cochem/Day trip via train to Trier

I'm biased towards the Neckar valley and I think it's vastly under-rated, so I would go for option A... but Neckargemünd, although nice enough, wouldn't be my choice. I would choose Bad Wimpfen, Hirschhorn or Eberbach. Two days is still enough for the Mittelrhein.

If you have a clear day in the Neckar valley, here's a short detour I recommend. Near Eberbach, follow the road signs up to Katzenbuckel. This is the highest point in the Odenwald mountain region. It looks more like a large hill, but it sits on a high plateau, which pushes it above the surrounding mountains. You can't drive all the way to the top, but it's a short walk from the parking area outside of a restaurant. There's a tower on top that provides you with a killer view.

Tom, can I catch the train to Heidelberg from the other towns you mentioned? The quick train to Heidelberg was the reason for selecting Neckargemuend but I would easily go with a personal recommendation. Or, I suppose we could drive from one of the other towns to catch the train in Neckargemuend. (What will the parking situation be?) Thanks so much for the side trip mention. Nothing like an insider (I've seen it mentioned that you live around Heidelberg) to give some good tips!

They all have Sbahn stops, although I'm not certain if Bad Wimpfen is on the same line. Parking has never been a problem in any of these towns.

Option A sounds very well-rounded. The Neckar part of your tour is so much less touristy and spoiled than the Rhine part. You'll see. (Ok, with the exception of Heidelberg). If you can make sure you visit the castle in Schwetzingen. It's all you could possibly want from a French castle incl. a beautiful, baroque-style mosque, which was a fashionable thing to have in those days...

Both would make great trips. I really like both areas, so I would vote for option A, too. You still have time in the Mosel/Rhine area, but get to see another nice area. Enjoy your trip!

I'm glad to hear the Option A is the clear choice since that is the one I went with. We're looking forward to seeing the beautiful and untouristy Neckar Valley as well as the castle in Heidelberg.
