Berschtegaden to Salzburg

On our 16 day trip we will be staying in Berschtegaden for 3 nights before moving on to Munich. We will have a rental car while here before dropping it off when we first arrive in Munich.
We are hoping to do a day trip to Salzburg from Berschtegaden. What is our best method of doing this?
Driving somewhere into Salzburg that we can park easily and take public transport of some sort into the old town?
Parking outside of the main city of Salzburg and taking a bus or train in? I think I read about a place called Untersberg, I had considered staying there and using it as our base for that part of our trip but then found a place closer to Berschtegaden. Is that a feasible option to park and take a bus into the old town?
This forum is so good for solid and helpful advice that I figured someone would be able to direct me as to the best option.
And....the best things to do in Salzburg with just one day - we don't mind if its a long day staying into the evening.
I've been planning this trip for over 6 months but now that's its just a month away i'm getting down to specifics to figure out.

THanks.

Like Boppard, Berchtesgaden offers guests a visitors card which provides free local bus transportation (to the Koenigssee, for example) as well as train transportation to Salzburg on the local trains. One train to Freilassing, where you have a 10-15-min. layover and then change trains for the final trip to Salzburg. Sample morning schedules:
7:06 - 8:17
8:27 - 9:42
9:32 - 10:42

There's also a bus (#840) that travels direct to Salzburg in 50 minutes. The first part of the ride is free with the visitors card (which btw offers discounts on other stuff too) but you must pay for the part of the ride which is in Austria as I understand it. Sample morning schedule:

9:15 - 10:04

B'gaden Guest card info:

Note that on the English-language page no mention is made of the train to Salzburg privilege. But I assure you that this transporation freebie is stated clearly on the German-language page for the guest card.

Set your GPS to Motel One-Mirabell which is located as you enter the city over the river. You will find a parking garage behind the motel. Easy in and easy out right back to the highway.

Why not just take the train to Salzburg?

Good question. The train ride to Salzburg station really is free with a B'gaden Guest Card. A day's parking fee is likely €10-€20, right? Perhaps a vignette is needed? Gas isn't free either. Trains get you back to B'gaden every hour or so, the last one just after 23:00.

We will have a rental car while here before dropping it off when we first arrive in Munich.

What you might do is look into subtracting some car rental days/fees by dropping the car off earlier, maybe shortly after you first arrive in Berchtesgaden, since B'gaden is handing you a free-transport card for that area anyway. If you schedule your day trip into Salzburg on your first full day in the area, you could drop the car in Freilassing on the way to Salzburg... then use your B'gaden Guest Card for the train from Freilassing into Salzburg and to return to B'gaden later that same day.

Then after X number of days in B'gaden... and you're ready to head to Munich... the train will take you from B'gaden to Munich's central station on the Bayern Ticket day pass - €36/2. But once you get there, do NOT discard it. This pass spared you driving within the city, but it will ALSO function as your day pass for exploring the city that same day. It provides unlimited local transport within Munich on all means of transport... subways, buses, S-Bahn, and trams. Use it to get to your hotel and drop your bags, then head out to Nymphenburg Palace, or BMW Welt, or whatever you've got planned.
