Berlin Visit

hello all,

I need some advice. Arrived in Berlin this afternoon. I will be here for 4 full days. Leave on Saturday. The following is a list of museums I want to visit. Staying near the central station on Lehrter Strasse.

Alte Nationalgalerie
Berggruen Museum
Gemäldegalerie
Jagdschloss Grunewald (Outside Berlin?)
Neue Nationalgalerie
Militärhistorisches Museum Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow (Outside Berlin?)

Landmarks I want to see:

The Brandenburg Gate
Checkpoint Charlie
The Siegessäule (Victory Column)

Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam

I am wondering if I should get one of the city cards or rely on individual tickets. For transportation, should I get day tickets or a multi-day pass? One of the city passes seems to include transportation. The thing is, I am not interested in many of the sites included in these offers, as you can see from the list above. I want to be thrifty but flexible without breaking the bank! I fly out of BER, so a transportation pass that includes that would be useful too.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

All mentioned places are within Berlin city limits; AB zone.

Choose regular day tickets. Do not forget to time stamp paper tickets for validation before first journey of the day.

Since Checkpoint Charlie is a little artificial compared to what it was in Cold War times I recommend Berlin Wall Memorial.

I agree with MarkK's comment above regarding Checkpoint Charlie and the Wall Memorial.

You appear to have a preference for art, but for the Soviet era, the Everyday Life in the GDR museum at the Kulturbrauerei would be a better choice than Checkpoint Charlie - and it's free.

I believe Berlin is best experiencd from the street, so be sure to allow time to wander and visit some of the characteristic neighborhoods.

I agree that you probably have a few too many things.

Re: transportation, you could purchase an ABC zone multi-day ticket, which would cover your trip to Potsdam and back to the airport. It would of course cover the bus, S and U, which you should make good use of to get around Berlin, because it is big and quite spread out.

I have not been to the Berggruen, Gemaldegalerie or the Alte. I went to the Neue when I was in Berlin in March. If you like modern art/video, you will enjoy it. The permanent collection is all on one floor, so it only takes an hour or two to see.

I second the recommendation for the Everyday Life in the DDR museum. I've been twice. It's so interesting. I would not make a special trip to the Checkpoint Charlie area, but if you are passing through, there is an outdoor exhibit you can stop and check out.

Thank you, MarkK, markcw, kayla.p for your helpful tips. My list is a 'wish list', subject to prioritizing and adaptation! Yes, indeed, art, particularly paintings, is my primary focus. By the way, I looked up Checkpoint Charlie right after I posted, and it is not the romanticized notion I had in my head since being a teenager! Will pass. Thanks again.
