Two of us need to get from Berlin Tegel Airport to Wolfsburg Hbf sometime after 6:30pm on Dec 1st. I want to take the train and am looking for the most economical option. I don't want to purchase a ticket in advance just incase there is a problem with the flights. Is there a regional ticket similar to the Bayern Ticket that we could use? Or is there another option that would work well?
I checked Deutsche Bahn website. There is a TXL bus direction Alexanderplatz Bhf. Bus leaves airport 19:16, arrives to Hauptbahnhof at 19:38. It is possible that there is some earlier bus. Try to catch the first one after you leave the airport so you have more time at the station to buy your ticket. Your train to Wolfsburg leaves Hauptbahnhof at 19:47 and arrives to Wolfsburg at 20:54. Direction of the train is to Oldenburg. The price for fully flexible ticket is 49 Euro. The lowest price is 19 Euro but you have to commit to specific train. If you are a risk averse buy the one for 49 Euro. If you like gamble buy the ticket for 19 Euro, You would have to buy it ahead. You can save 30 Euro or loose 19. I think I would go for gamble.
Thanks Ilja, this is what I found on the bahn.de website as well. I was hoping there might be a more cost effective option like a regional ticket that I wasn't aware of but it sounds like there probably isn't.
Are you flying to Berlin from the North America, or from somewhere in Europe? That might make a difference as to how much the flight could be delayed.
Your Options are:
Full fare express train, 1¼ hours, 98€ for two standard fares,
Express train, 1¼ hours, as low as 38€ for non-refundable Saver Fares, or
52€ for a flexible Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket (a regional ticket for multiple Lands). The QdLT would also be usable on many buses.
If you allow a few hours margin for late arrival with a Savings Fare, you might as well use the QdL-Ticket and leave right after arrival with no risk.
Or, bite the bullet and buy express train tickets for 98€ when you arrive and get there in a little over an hour.
Thanks, Lee. I wasn't aware of the Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket. The flight will be coming from North America with a (6+ hour) connection in London.
Quer-durchs-Land means across the land. It's one of two passes that, as opposed to state or Länder tickets, which can only be used in an individual state, can be used for regional trains completely across Germany, independent of state borders. The other one is the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (beautiful weekend ticket).
QdL-Ticket is for weekdays, and like regional tickets cannot be used before 9 AM. It starts at 44€ for the first person, 8€ for each additional person up to 5, total.
The SW-T is for weekends, and you can start using it at any time. It cost 40€ for 1 to 5 persons.
