Berlin to Nuremburg with stop in Dresden

We had family in Dresden that got out in the nick of time--with the SS physically chasing them to Hamburg to the last American ship to leave Germany in WWII. They sailed into Ellis Island Thanksgiving Day, 1939.
Dresden was the prettiest European city of them all until the end of the war. The incredible museums are now finally reconstructed and there's much to see.
Because Dresden was closed for so long to Westerners, relatively few people realize it's now a destination city--not just one to go through on a day trip.

Of course. Just click on the "change other data" button on the first page after you've entered "Berlin" and Nuremberg", date and time you want to start on the DB website. Then click on the "add intermediate stops" button, then "Dresden" and how long a stop you want. like 3 or 6 hours. You'll see the results, and you can go back and tweak it if you want.

Dresden is not on the direct train route so the detour adds 2 hours travel time. For instance depart Berlin at either 7:00 or 9:00 and get to Dresden in 2 hours. There are luggage lockers at the main station (Hbf) which is closest to the old town. Depart Dresden about 17:50 or 18:50 and get to Nuremburg in 4.5 hours.

If you wanted to stop in Leipzig, instead, then each train travel leg can be an hour shorter (depends on departure time). Luggage lockers are here, too.

In the RS guide, Rick recommends taking the train between Wurtzberg/Nuremberg/Dresden/Munich. Our plan was to do the reverse of Rick's map starting in Berlin and ending in Frankfurt. We were planning to train it from Berlin and work our way down to Munich and then rent a car from there. When I look at the train schedules and travel times, it seems much more convenient to drive instead. It seems we may be better off just renting from Berlin and driving the entire way. Am I missing something?
