Berlin to Hamburg Airport

I need to get to the Hamburg airport from Berlin to catch a flight leaving at 13:30. I was planning to take a train from Berlin to Hamburg, then figure out how to get to the Hamburg airport. Is the Hamburg train station close to the Hamburg airport? Any help would be appreciated.

Head over to the German Rail site at https://www.bahn.com/en to see schedules and pricing. The fastest route is ICE train from Berlin main train station (Berlin Hbf) to Hamburg Hbf Station, and transfer to the S1 train direct to the airport.

Not really, but at DB's website linked above you can buy a ticket from Berlin to Hamburg airport. Then you will see how long it takes.

But where are you flying? Spending the last night in Hamburg might not be a bad idea.

I will check the DB's website. Thanks.
We are flying to Gdansk, Poland.

Do you think that I need to make a reservation ahead of time or can I just get on the train in Berlin without problems? It will be for Sept 12th.

Then you don't have to arrive too far in advance. But how did you come up with the idea to travel from Berlin to Gdansk by taking the train to Hamburg and then fly to Gdansk? Why not take the direct train from Berlin to Gdansk? Takes a bit less than 6 hours and costs €30 if bought in advance.

Badger,

Actually, I am not so sure why I did that. I think when I was booking things back in Mar, the train ride from Berlin to Gdansk seemed so long. I wonder if I can cancel my flight from Hamburg to Gdansk on Wizz Airlines. I will have to check in to that. The train ride sounds so much simpler.

It is less than 6 hours. The detour via Hamburg will not be faster.

Probably depends on what kind of ticket you have. But even if you can't cancel the ticket, you can often get the taxes and fees back. And I would not be surprised if the Berlin-Gdansk train ends up being cheaper than the Berlin-Hamburg train.

The train ride sounds so much simpler.

It is. A lot simpler.

I just looked up the schedules to Gdansk. Now I remember another reason that I didn't book the train. This train wouldn't leave until 12:46 and gets to Gdansk around 19:00. I wanted to get there earlier in the day, so that we would have time to do things the day that we get there.
Thanks for everything.

What time would I need to be at the Hamburg airport if my flight leaves at 13:30? I have options of getting there at 10:59 or 11:49.

Get there at 10:59. 2 1/2 hours will be plenty of time. 11:49, while probably adequate, leaves no time for errors.

10:59, or preferably a bit earlier. You not only need time for check in and security, you also need some margin in case of delayed or cancelled trains.

Although I still think this is a really bad way of getting to Gdansk. If it's really important to get there not too late, a much better option would be to book a flight from Berlin to Gdansk via Warsaw.

Just an idea:
I do not know how comfortable you are with sleeping during transport but you could take an over-night Flixbus from Berlin to Gdansk. You would arrive at 8 in the morning, have a cheap transport and save one night in a hotel.

From the Hamburg Hbf (central station) you can simply hop on the S1 line towards Poppenbüttel / Airport. It's a bit less than 25 minutes and you arrive directly in the airport. If you are on a Deutschlandticket, your HVV ticket is included. Otherwise you can simply buy a train ticket for about 6,50 from the machines around the train station.

Easy peasy.
