Berlin on Marathon Weekend

It just so happens that the Berlin Marathon will be taking place during my September stay in Berlin. I know the marathon is huge with perhaps a million spectators. (And interestingly, the marathon will be taking place on the same Sunday as the national elections this year.)

To those who have been in Berlin for or during the Marathon event, just how difficult will movement in the city be on race day? How crowded will the city be that weekend? And any suggestions for what to do or avoid doing during that weekend?

I can only say that I was in Berlin for the marathon weekend in 2004, and the only way I knew was that it was harder to get a hotel. Once I was actually there, I didn't notice it at all.

If it's anything like New York on marathon weekend, the big issue is road closures along the route, which last for many hours. As long as you take the U-bahn and S-bahn everywhere, you won't notice these. If you are going to be walking around or taking buses or taxis, be sure to check for relevant road closures to avoid problems.
