Berlin night life for old guy

I'm going to Madrid and Berlin for a few days in late June. I'm in my '50's and love going to see live music. When I look at travel books and sites, they always talk about cities that have great night life, but I always feel like I don't fit that. I don't want to go to a DJ oriented club, or anyplace that doesn't even get started until well after midnight. I would like to go see some live music. Are there suggestions on where and if I could find this kind of place in Madrid or Berlin? I'm posting in both the Spain and Germany sections. Thanks for any suggestions!

I guess it depends on what kind of music you want. In Berlin...

A-Train: small jazz club near Savigny Platz

Quasimodo: another jazz club (at least originally) that now ventures into a variety of music, near Zoologischer Garten S Station.

You may check the "Going Out" section of the website for EXBERLINER magazine, an English magazine for expats living in Berlin. Better yet, try to find a copy of it in Berlin when you are there -- it has ads for several music venues. I picked up a copy at Another Country, an English bookstore in Kreuzberg.

The Rough Guide to Berlin is the most comprehensive travel guide for Berlin and has a variety of night spots listed for each section of the city. An updated version came out in March.
