My wife and I will be in Europe for a little over a week next month - first time in many years with no kids! We will be in Berlin for a short 72 hours over a weekend, and are looking for recommendations for sights and off the beaten path things to do. If there are major museums or historical sights that require advance booking, please advise. We'll be staying in Kreuzkölln Palais on the Paul-Lincke-Ufer.
Mark,
Thank you for the very helpful response! I was able to make a reservation for the Reichstag dome thanks to you. Unfortunately, the Reichstag tours themselves are booked 6 weeks out. As for the neighborhood, I believe it's actually called "Reuterkiez". I believe it's river side.
Thanks,
Vlad
If you’re visiting the Wall Documentation Museum (sic) near Mauer park in Prenzlauer Berg, just up the U-Bahn line is the Kulturbrauei Museum on life in East Germany. I thought it was super interesting, and felt like a neighborhood secret. The other East Germany museum in Berlin has a reputation as being crowded and touristy. Those two sights make a good pairing. The Kulturbrauei is a big neighborhood collective with a bunch of different performance spaces, a grocery store, and a beer garden that looks like it’d be fun in nicer weather.
Here is a good 3-day itinerary for Berlin with map: https://easytrips.me/destinations/berlin/3-days-berlin-top-attractions/
Don't fail to bring your physical passport and no big bags to the Reichstag. Berlin is so rich in sights that you will quickly fill up 72 hours. Air conditioning would be important to me in July, but it's not universal in Germany. We once had a hot week when air conditioned luxury hotel systems could not keep up with the level of heat.
You do not have time for it (S-Bahn + taxi or long walk) but the Grunderzeit Museum is fascinating and off the beaten path. (Link) I'm interested for the show business reason of the Pulitzer-winning play, "I am My Own Wife." Book infrequent English tours (by tour only museum) in advance.
