Berlin - Kreuzberg safety

Hello. I have a room at Oriana Hotel, at Orianenplatz in east Kreuzberg, for a weekend next month. I have read conflicting accounts of safety concerns- some say there's been a spike in crime around there, Gorlitzer Park, and Kottbusser Tor, and that returning to the hotel late at night, especially if taking the U bahn alone, could be a problem. Others say it's just an edgy urban vibe but not unsafe.
Can anyone give me a first-hand account of this area currently?
Thank you.

Both mentioned places are defined as kbOs (crime-affected places) by Berlin Police Department - drugs and resulting crime to "organize" money are main issues there.
Translated to German crime level it means to be more careful but do not be afraid - a few thousand people are on their way there without any problems. The new police station at Kotti results already in lower numbers of reported cases.

I live at the other side of river Spree - only 3 kms away.

I am staying in that area for a week next month and I have read a little about it also. I wouldn't walk through Görlitzer Park at night, but this will be my fourth trip to Berlin, and I have never felt unsafe using the UBahn at night.
