Berlin in July

Hi everyone, I've never been to Berlin, just wondering if July is good month to visit? Is it crowded, most museums open, nightlife good? And what day trips do people recommend? Thanks.

Berlin is always busy but the city is spread out enough that it isn't overwhelming. Of course the museums are open in July, why would they close? Berlin is famous for being a cutting edge, trendy, party city, and it doesn't get completely dark until almost 23:00, so evenings outside are the norm as well as clubbing.

For day trips you could go anywhere from Hamburg to Dresden, or keep it closer with Potsdam, the Spreewald, Ravensbruck or Sachsenhausen Concentration Camps, or the Wannsee Villa

Hi,

There was a heat wave a week or so ago in Berlin. In July expect the temperature to 25 to 30C or higher. It's crowded, expect that too, especially if you go to certain areas, such as Berlin Alexanderplatz...tons of people there. It was crowded enough in early June when I was there.

On day trips...since you've not been there before, I would suggest Potsdam to be sure, take a tour leaving from Potsdam Hbf., which includes also Neues Palais along with the famous sights of Potsdam. Depending on your interest as regards to day trips, cultural, historical: I would also suggest Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Halle an der Saale, Neuruppin (which I just did not have the time on the last trip), Neustrelitz. How much time are you spending in Berlin?

Unlike a lot of popular destinations, Berlin doesn't really have a district or neighborhood that's central to the city's cultural life. So unless there's a special event, the city never feels overwhelmed with visitors. Ditto for museums and monuments (the Reichstag being one exception).

Berlin pulses with nightlife 365 days a year... but once again, there's no central district, so you need to search it out.

Weather- usually not too hot, but there can be quite a bit of variation year to year and week to week.

July is low season, with some luck you can get a 4* room for less than 50€. It will be crowded, but compared to the Louvre or Vatican Museums Berlins museums are empty. Weatherwise... well, I often spend a week there in July, and one year I had rain for the whole week, and one year unbearable 36°C/97°F.
And day trips? What are your interests?

Temperature in July usually won't go above 35℃, but this year it was 38℃ for a couple of days.
But still very cool and comfortable in the morning and evening.

For the day trip, how about Dresden?
They have those traditional buildings and scenery you can't find in Berlin.
It takes around two hours by train from Berlin, and cost €27 for one way.

Berlin is always worth a visit. Summer, of course is the best time. Kreuzberg and Neukölln are very nice an multicultural district you have to see. "The Tempelhof Feld" is also worth seeing . In case you have no accommodation yet, I recommend the Three Little Pigs Hostel. It is in "Mitte" and has beautiful old courtyards and a very nice team.

I just left Berlin on Sunday and it was fabulous. Yes, lots of tourists in town, but you would never know it if you ride the U-bahns and S-bahns, always enough room the find a seat. The 100 bus from Zoo Bahnhof to Alexander Platz was fine if you board at the origin points with seats on the upper level. It did slow down the journey with many people boarding mid trip without passes and needing to buy tickets from the driver, but that was about it. Even the line at the Pergamon Museum, which looked daunting at 2 pm, was eaten up in 20 minutes. Go a little later and you'll get right in, but the actual Pergamon Alter is closed for renovations for the next couple of years.
Uwe at Pension Peters makes sure that every guest gets his short orientation on getting around Berlin. The area around Savigny Platz is solid outdoor cafes. Hefner, next door to the Pension Peters, was doing land office business in pricey cocktails for the young hip crowd (how did we get in?). There was even a busy breakfast spot a few doors away for the folks who had been up all night. Other than that, can't comment too much on nightlife. Its definitely there though.

I am in Berlin now, it's rained a little, mornings and evenings are cool. No problems with lines at museums, but look into the Welcome Card if you want unlimited local transportation and free or reduced museum prices.

I thought five days would be enough this time (second trip), but I could use a month here!
