Looking for advice. The only time I have next year to fit Berlin into my schedule just happens to fall during their Oktoberfest. It's not something I'm interested in attending.... I'm more into history and architecture. I'm wondering if the crowds will be so bad that I should just skip the city. Don't know when, or if, I will ever get back that way.
Oktoberfest is in Munich and completely irrelevant to a Berlin stay.
Oktoberfest is huge in Munich but not elsewhere. Berlin does host an Oktoberfest celebration at Zentral Festplatz am Kurt-Schumacher-Damm near Tegel Airport and I believe there's also one in Alexanderplatz. I wouldn't expect there to be any noticeable impact on Berlin, certainly not in comparison to Munich so I would suggest that you'll have little to worry about.
Thanks, JC. That's what I needed to know.
Actually Berlin has some more events around Oktoberfest than JC described but the absolute main event is Munich - no doubt. https://www.berlin.de/restaurants/oktoberfest/
Berlin is too big that you will notice such a side event. Other main events in September have a bigger impact to the city, e.g. IFA fair and Berlin marathon.
Interesting for you can be Berlin Art Week: http://www.berlinartweek.de/en/berlin-art-week/
Do watch out for the dates of the events in Berlin that MarkK mentions. During such events, rooms can be hard to get, and prices can go way up. I inadvertently visited Berlin during the Marathon one year, and had difficulty getting a room. However, it did not otherwise impact my visit in any way.
It is funny how, in the US, "Oktoberfest" is synonymous with "Germany," and people don't realize it's specific to Munich. I travel in spring and fall, and made sure to visit Munich in the spring to get away from Oktoberfest, but it doesn't impact other German cities.
Judy, Oktoberfest will not affect your stay, though there will be some areas where there will be Oktoberfest festivities. However, the Berlin Marathon is huge and can affect hotel availability, as noted above.
