Berlin Day of Arrival

With public transport of Berlin nearly all sights are close by and fast to reach.

An evening walk from Berlin for Beginners from stop 12 to 6 or 5 is a good start.
Or look at top 10 sights with map. Potsdamer Platz is at lower right corner of the green area (Tiergarten).

For Reichstag tour reservation is recommended.

We will have a short amount of time in Berlin, so we are planning on taking an Insider tour the next day. I was hoping to check out a site that would not be on the tour. I need to look into it a bit further. I am trying to find something close by just in case we are complete mush from the jet lag. Not sure if our brains will be up to the challenge of public transportation that day. 😉

I have seen the thread on Insider Tours and I have a different opinion on that for people who have only a very limited time in Berlin (see post with reasons in this thread). There also your question is answered "I was hoping to check out a site that would not be on the tour.".

Public transport also from BER airport is very easy.

Choose ABC zone option for way to / from airport. Do not forget time stamp for paper ticket validation.

My first day upon arrival in Frankfurt ca. 10 AM after the overnight non-stop flight from SFO will end up in Berlin towards the early evening ca. 9 PM or so since I have decided to transfer in Hannover Hbf rather than taking the direct 5 plus hour ICE ride Frankfurt to Berlin Hbf.

Since I'm staying this time at Berlin Ostbahnhof still very convenient.

Potsdamer Platz is a major junction point for public transport, a busy area. Taking into account your energy level, you could leisurely explore the immediate vicinity of the location of your accommodations.
