We're going to be in Berlin for a week this summer with kids age 6 and 9. We've been before and did some of the main kids activities- like boat tours, kid-friendly museums (Anoha, illusion, museum island spots, berlin zoo), etc. Any hidden gems or tips for us on this trip? I'm interested in the best kid-friendly public pools or lakes. We haven't visited the west side of Berlin much either- we stayed in Prenzlauer Berg last time and this time we will be in Pankow.
Also- we'd love to do 1-2 day trips to little charming towns! Would love ideas given traveling with kids! Thank you for any advice!!
Berlin has a second zoo, called Tierpark with own subway station on U5 line. Naturkundemuseum with the huge dinosaur skelettons are always a highlight for kids. Have a look at Citadel Spandau and Teufelsberg with ruin of NSA station. At Domäne Dahlem kids can see old handcrafts and agriculture living.
Potsdam offers some interesting spots for kids, e. g. NANO Science Center Potsdam, Filmpark Babelsberg, Falkenhof Potsdam or Kletterwald AbenteuerPark. Not to forget sweets factory outlet Katjes Gläserne Fabrik.
Spreewald is another beloved day trip destination. Enjoy a ferryman canoe trip. At Spreewelten you can swim near penguins or book feeding the penguins. The Troplcal islands is a very large tropical resort with swimming and fun activities. With other activities enough for some days alone there.
Normally I would also add Hamburg with Miniatur Wunderland and a port tour but from Aug 1 every direction needs 2:45 hrs instead of 2 hours. Details in this thread.
I don't have kids, so my insight is limited. I've walked past the Legoland Discovery Center and thought it would be something cool to do as a kid. The DDR Museum near museum island has some kid friendly things to explore. If you did not discover Volkspark Friedrichshain, its Märchenbrunnen (fairy tale fountain), cafe, and playgrounds on your last trip, you may find it of interest. I've walked past many cool-looking playgrounds in Berlin, and there are indeed many public lakes around the city; google is probably your friend for finding some of those.
Speaking of google, If you haven't done a google search of something like "things to do with kids in Berlin," such a search tends to be very helpful.
Also... this board skews a little older in terms of posters. If you haven't done so, you may post in the Trip Advisor Berlin forum. I find old Reddit posts very helpful for trip planning, too!
Berlin is great. Enjoy!
Thank you both! This is so helpful. I was interested in a day trip to Quedlinburg but I think Spreewald sounds super fun and closer! We will check out the other zoo and go back to our favorite kids spots too.
I'm going to spend 5 nights in Quedlinburg in September. I have been trying to get to the Harz Mountains for several years now, and this is finally the year. Quedlinburg looks gorgeous, but it's 3-3.5 hours each way on the train from Berlin; about 2.5-3 hours each way by car. I wouldn't want to do that as a day trip by myself, to be honest. Seems even less appealing with a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old.
