Berlin

Traveling to Berlin early June for about 3 nights. Can anyone recommend the best area to stay that is walkable? Any of your
must see's would be great too! Thanks!

Well, anywhere in Berlin is walkable, but the city is so spread out that you will still need to use the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, or bus to see all the sites most folks are interested in. Fortunately, that is both easy and inexpensive.

I stayed at the Adina Apartment Hotel in the Hackescher Markt area and loved it! I was very near the DDR Museum, the TV tower, and Museum Island, and it was a quick walk to Lindenstraße. The hotel is very convenient to the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and trams (in fact, the S-Bahn was right around the corner and can be used to go directly to and from the airport). There were lots of good restaurants and grocery stores within a few blocks as well.

jerry,

I stayed in the area between Bahnhof Zoo and Savignyplatz and found it to be reasonably "walkable", and good transportation links. There are some nice restaurants in the area. I stayed at Pension Peters and would certainly recommend it. For travel in June, it would be a good idea to book right away!

Prenzlauer Berg. More of a village feel than big city, but close to everything and excellent transportation options. Look at Hotel Kastanienhof. Dome at the Reichstag; Berlin Wall.

I’m with Ken. We, too stayed at Pension Peters and it was perfect for our 10 day stay. Good transportation nearby and stellar restaurants within a couple of blocks. Walking distance to just about anywhere we wanted to visit. The pension is nice, spotless and the managers/owners are friendly and helpful with recommendations, directions and advice.

You do not give your budget but we just spent 5 nights at the Regent Berlin. It’s right by the Gendarmenmarkt, just off the Unter den Linden. We walked everywhere from there…Checkpoint Charlie, Reichstag, Museum Island…none more than 15 minutes away. The hotel was a peaceful oasis in a very busy city. It was definitely at the high end of our budget…we paid 340 US a night with a fabulous breakfast. The rooms are extremely large and comfortable.

This hotel just does everything right and it was a totally worthwhile splurge on our trip. We were sad to leave.

Thanks so much for all your tips! It's amazing how many places their are to stay in so many different areas! Hard to just choose one. I also saw the Myers Hotel and it looked amazing too. Just didn't want to be too far away, but not too close! LOL

Your profile doesn't indicate where you're from. However if you have a large library in your neighbourhood, see if they have a copy of the Rick Steves Germany guidebook. There will be lots of information there on the different areas in Berlin, hotels in each area in different price ranges and detailed information on the sights and getting around via U-Bahn or S-Bahn.

We don’t know much about your travel party from your post but my biggest piece of advice for Berlin is picking a hotel near a U-Bahn, S-Bahn or bus stop. Berlin is large and spread out and while some of the main points of interest are grouped together, there are some that are far away. However, if you use public transportation, you can get to things easily and efficiently.

Just got back from spending a week in Berlin among other stops and had a travel party of 6, 4 of which were kids, and we found more than enough to do. We simply ran out of time. If you list interests or plans, I am happy to share thoughts.

Enjoy!

@agwoodsus - Thanks for the tips. We are considering a hotel a little out of the way and not right in city center. Max Brown Ku'damm is the name. Got great reviews. We are in our 70's and do like to walk. Looks like S-bahn is close. Several places around Checkpoint Charlie look ok too. Just seems very crowded area. Very hard to choose. We arrive 6June for 3 days.

I stayed in the Adina Hackescher Markt and would stay there again. I went to the Checkpoint Charlie area and honestly it's very touristy and IMHO the transport options aren't as good.

I was able to walk to the Brandenburg Gate as well as the Reichstag and Museum Island was just across the bridge.

I agree with heather. Checkpoint Charlie was my least favorite thing that we did and I couldn’t wait to get out of there. Pretty much everything else about Berlin was great, though!

You are correct that Ku’Damm is away from the epicenter a bit, but that’s okay. We stayed out that way as well but it was easy to get to the downtown area on the 100 bus.

I stayed at a lovely hotel on Friedrichstrasse on the Spree. I did a ton of walking as it was so centrally located. It was perfect. I walked through the Tiergarten, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie museum, Potsdamer Platz, Reichstag, & Mauerpark, for example.

We stayed in a hotel in Potsdamer Platz and walked to all the sites and various neighborhoods. If you are looking for a guide we used Jeremy Minsberg, theberlinexpert.com, [email protected]. He was one of the recommended guides from Rick Steves 2023 Berlin book. He was extremely knowledgable and had a great personality. I have hired a lot of guides and Jeremy is by far my favorite. Have fun in Berlin.
