Berchtesgaden Tour

I am considering a do it my self tour, taking the 840 bus from Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden Hbf, riding the bus to the document center and back.
If I do not take the tour, what would I miss?

Eh, the Documentation Center? And some bus rides.

BTW, the bus that goes from the Berchtesgaden Hbf to the Doc Center is the #838 bus, which leaves from in front of the Hbf. If you purchase an RVO Tagesticket in Salzburg for 10,20€, it will include the 840 bus to Berchtesgaden and most local buses, including 838, in Berchtesgaden.

A Bayern-Ticket would not include the part of the 840 route in Austria, but would include the local buses in Berchtesgaden. It would be valid for the train from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and back. The bus takes less time, but it's last run leaves Berchtesgaden Hbf at 18:15. If you want to stay in Berchtesgaden past that time, you will need a Bayern-Ticket for the train or a BGL Tagesticket Bus & Bahn for 12€, which is valid for both the 840 bus and the train between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden and the local buses.

thanks for the reply, I guess I should have explained myself better, I am in St. Johann Im Pongau and I get a ticket from there to Salzburg, then the bus to Berchtesgaden.
I am a bit confused, I am guessing I take a bus from the Berchtesgaden Hbf to the document center, then another bus to the top or the restaurant?

The bus from the ZOB in front of the Hbf in Berchtesgaden to the Doc center is bus 838. If you get any of the several Tagestickets offered by RVO, the 838 bus is included.

The bus from the Doc center to the Nest is a special mountain bus that goes up the private road to the Nest. It is not included in a Tagesticket. There is one "fee" for the bus up to the parking lot, the elevator to the top, and admission to the Nest. Actually, admission to the Nest is free, you just have to get there. Some people hike up from Obersalzberg just to avoid an admission fee.
