Berchtesgaden Questions

I am planning to take the bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden. I have a few questions regarding my itinerary. We come in on Saturday, Oct 10th. From my understanding, once the bus drops us off, we can easily get to our hotel downtown.

We would like to go to an Eagles Nest Tour and take the boat across the Königssee (spelling?) lake and walk to Obersee.

  • Could we do this in one day? I don't want to be running around.
  • Do we need to book tickets for these things in advance?
  • Can we get to these easily if we are staying here without a car and dependent on public transport?

Thanks so much for your time!

No I wouldn't want to do all that all in one day. Eagles Nest although you could do it quick in maybe 3 or 4 hours. But the Eagles Nest in my opinion deserves a full day. Sit down to eat at the restauraunt, and hike around.

The boat ride on the Konigssee can be done quick as well maybe down to St. Bartholomä and back, but it would be really a quick trip. I'd slow down and take in the scenery and area.
Not sure if you could do Eagles Nest and the boat ride on the lake all in one day. Might be a speed record!

To me I'd take one full day at Konigssee and you can hike down to the Obersee, and either a half day or full day at the Eagles Nest

The public transportation in Berchtesgaden is wonderful. We have been there twice now in the last 5 years, and have always simply taken public transportation. You can easily get from the Banhoff or train station to any of the hotels-might have to walk across the street or a half block to get to the hotel from the bus stop. Just pick out a bus schedule at the train station. Your hotel booking gives you a card for free public transportation on the bus lines, our two hotels gave us the cards on check in.

St. Bartholomä and back,

The last time I was on Königssee (2017) we took the boat to St. Bartholomä. When we went to leave, the line to go back to Schönau was huge, so we went on up to Salat (there was no line for Salat). I think we had lunch at Salat. When we came back from lunch, there was no line for the boat, and when we got to St. Barts, we were already on the boat and didn't have to wait in that line.

Another reason to go on to Salat, it's a short walk across the bar to the Obersee. It's beautiful, worth seeing. The "bar" is actually an old landslide that came down and formed a dam that isolated Obersee from the main part of the lake.

While you are visiting the Eagles Nest, come down and visit the Dokumentation Zentrum. It's really interesting.

We just were in Berchtsgaden on Friday, two days ago. We took the bus (#840) from Salzburg. It was a bit crowded so try to get on near the train station (at the start of the run) in order to get a seat. After reaching the town of Berchtsgaden, you will take another bus up to the place where the Eagle Nest tours begin, an easy transfer with the same ticket as bus #840. It is right next to the fascinating Documentation Center. We spent two and a half hours in the Documentation Center in the morning first and then did the Eagles Nest Tour in the afternoon. Tickets to the Documentation Center do not need advance booking but the Eagle Nest Tour we booked weeks in advance. Both were very informative and not repetitive. We could have spent much longer in the Documentation Center because it was very interesting, especially seeing the actual bunkers hidden under the mountain. We booked a private Eagle Nest Tour and it took the full afternoon. We highly recommend it. The scenery was spectacular and the Eagle Nest building is amazing. Plan to spend some time up there. The ride up and down is pretty breath taking too! While we did not visit the Lake, it looked beautiful and would take another day to enjoy. Have a great trip!!

The ZOB (Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof = central bus station) in Berchtesgaden is next to the Hbf, down in the valley, below the town. There is a regular bus from there to the bus startup station for the Eagles Nest, Königssee, and some stops up in the town. Good news: Buses to towns run multiple times an hour and, if your hotel in on the western side of town, there is a footpath up the hill from the train station. Bad news: you'll have to take the bus back down the hill to the ZOB to take another bus to the Eagles Nest or Königssee.

When I was there, I stayed down in the valley, close (a short walk) to the ZOB, from where I caught buses to other places.

I agree that you shouldn't try to do everything in one day. We spent a morning and lunch at the Eagle's Nest, then came down and explored the Dokumentation Zentrum. That took most of a day. The next day we did Königssee. We went not only to St Bartholomä, but on up the lake to Übersee, which was worth it, and that trip, along with a visit to Wimbachklamm, took most of a day.

Don't push it; slow down and "smell the roses".
