Berchtesgaden over NYE or any other recommendations?

We’re considering a 3 nights stay in Berchtesgaden over the New Year but aren’t sure if it’s the right place for us.

About us: we can’t drive, so we rely on trains and cable cars. We love mountains, pretty old towns, and Bavarian food. We’re not experienced hikers but enjoy easy scenic walks. We have some cheap return flights to Munich so will take the train there and back, with a 2 nights stop in Salzburg on the way back.

We’ve previously spent New Year in Innsbruck and loved the festive atmosphere. On New Year’s Day we went up Nordkette and it was stunning. A few years later, we went to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and absolutely loved it. We did short walks using cable cars, went up the Zugspitze which was stunning and down and around Lake Eibsee, we walked through the Partnach Gorge and up a hiking trail on the other side, and really enjoyed the old town – beautiful and not too busy. The unseasonal warm weather meant those hikes were easily done with no snow on the ground but it felt like quite wintery and fresh.

Can we expect a similar experience in Berchtesgaden? We’re also considering a day trip to Bad Reichenhall from Berchtesgaden, especially if the weather is poor, as the spas look like a good backup plan.

Some people have warned us that if the weather is properly wintry, hiking might be difficult. That said, we’re also happy just soaking up the Alpine atmosphere and have a little wander around like we did in the snow up the Zugspitze. We’ve also heard it may not be as lively — we don’t need crowds, but is it likely to feel really dead? Hotels sure seem fairly booked up for those dates!

If Berchtesgaden doesn’t sound like the best fit, could you suggest alternatives that are easy to reach from Munich by train and still convenient for then heading to Salzburg?

It might have been where we stayed, maybe the days of the week, but I found Berchtesgaden sort of spread out, and a bit dull. You have the central area, the train station well away from there, hotels spread all over. The impression was the area is better with a car, but depending on what you like to do, it may be fine. We got by with a mix of trains, buses, walking, and taxis. We were there in March, so not prime season. There may be towns that have a more compact city center that would offer a better experience.

At that time of year, The Eagles Nest will be closed, Salt mines maybe open, might need to check on other sights.

You've almost answered your own question! I would say STAY in Bad Reichehall, with the possiblity of day trip to Berchtesgaden. Most hotels are in the centre/Spa/main station triangle which is flat and easy walking with luggage. The town is the end of a Salzburg city bus route which starts at the main station and the runs along the edge of the centre so has stops close to many hotels. It's half way to Berchtesgaden on the local train from Freilassing so the airport connections are the same but shorter. Some hotels may have minimum stay requirements over that week and may include a gala dinner on New Years Eve (even if you weren't looking for it). I've stayed at the "Bayern Vital" which has a nice indoor pool but at rack rates you are paying for it and the "Vier Jahreszeiten" which is simpler. Both are easy walks to railway station, bus stops, spa and central restaurants.

For travel from Munich Aiport by train use a "Bayern Ticket" day pass. It's €32 for one person plus €10 each for 2nd to 5th in the same group (so €42 for 2). Not valid on IC/EC/Railjet and not valid before 09:00 on weekdays excluding holidays and 31st December. Take the S8 to Ostbahnhof (the S1 takes much longer), then RE5 Salzburg train but get off at Freilassing and then the local train. Also valid from Salzburg to go back to the airport using RE5/S8 but if you would need to depart before 09:00 on a weekday it could be cheaper to book in advance for a Sparpreis tickets on an EC train. Bayern Tickets are bought from the DB ticket machines (also MVV machines at the airport) - you buy ONE ticket for the number of people and there should be a box on the back to write your names in. Also available on the DB App.

I'd go to Chiemsee. The lake will be pretty if there's any snow, you have the spas right there, and it's enroute.
