Berchtesgaden in one day

We will be traveling from Munich to Berchtesgaden for the day. I'm wondering if we have time to visit the Eagle's Nest and the Salt Mine both? Gray Line tours do not offer both in one day but I don't see any reason we couldn't do both if we took public transportation and made our own tour....I'm just wondering if this is wrong because it's not offered by any tour provider.

We have one older person and three young children in our group (not doing the tour through Eagle's Nest Tours for this reason, they do not book children under 8), but all are good travelers! :)

depends on how big a day you are prepared for ? assuming your there in summer?
when we stayed in Berchtesgaden we did eagles nest , lake konigsee and the drove the rossfeld road, all in one day. we did have our own car and the crowds for eagles nest were not too bad. but your coming and returning to munich ???
we haven't done the salt mine there but did the slat mine tour at hallstatt , usually most 'tours' take a few hours.

the salt mine is close to the town ( not far from the therme- worth it if you were staying there and had time, for something different) and eagles nest is not far from there. so IF you can get from place to place ( taxi- uber etc) easily/quickly then maybe.
if the weather is not good then ditch eagles nest and consider other things in the same area. document centre, the town of berchtesgaden is nice to walk around also.

you don't need a 'guide' for eagles nest etc.
