Berchtesgaden?

In the opinion of those of you who have been there, is Berchtesgaden and Eagles Nest worth your time?

It depends on how much time you've allotted, what time of year, where you're coming from, where you're going afterwards, what you expect to see and do there, etc. For example, if you're visiting Hamburg or Berlin... probably not, especially if time is tight. But if you'll be on your way from Munich to Salzburg or Vienna...maybe.

Hi,

We love Berchtesgaden and the area around it. We've spent 18 nights based just outside of Berchtesgaden and plan to return again later this year. Love the old town and it's a great place to base for easy day trips, which seem endless.

I really enjoyed the hike to the Obersee from the Königsee boat ride. It was beautiful. Hiking around the Eagles Nest was interesting. One of my favorite places in Germany.

I wouldn't go out of my way just to go there and just to see the Eagles Nest. But if you're there, it is beautiful, and there are other things to see. I think if you want to see Eagles Nest, I would do as a day trip from Salzburg.

I'd rather stay in Berchtesgaden than in Salzburg. I think there are more interesting things to do there. I have really enjoyed my trips to the Eagles Nest (3 times). It's an eerie feeling to know that Hitler and others were in that same room. Plus if it is clear, the view is spectacular. The Dokumentation Center is well worth a visit. The boat trip on Königsee is nice and the Obersee is beutiful.

If I were doing it, I'd stay multiple days in Berchtesgaden and make a day trip to Salzburg.

If you are interested in WWII history, the Eagles Nest and the Obersalzberg Dokumentation Center and Bunker are definitely worth visiting. We also would have liked to have seen the view from the Eagles Nest, but on the day we visited (on 25 May 2013), there was very dense cloud cover and 8 inches of snow on the ground! Yes, this was at the end of May!

pa,

I'd also recommend visiting the Obersalzberg Dokumentation Centre & Bunkers, as well as the Eagle's Nest if you have time. You might consider a tour with Eagles Nest Tours as you'll learn far more than by just going on your own. Whether you'll be able to get to the Eagle's Nest will depend on what time of year you'll be there, and the current conditions. The road leading to the access can be closed by snow until late in the spring.

The displays at the Dokumentation Centre are mostly in German, but you can rent an audioguide with English-language commentary. Only a part of the extensive Bunker complex has been renovated, but it provides an interesting glimpse of history.

We were there in 2006. The highlight of our Bavarian trip. If you are a WW II buff like me...this is a must stop. The town itself is real cute and the trip up the mountain to the document center and then to the Eagles nest is thrilling
