Berchtesgaden / Eagles Nest in the rain??

Hi gang,

I am in Munich and was planning on doing the Harpers Eagles Nest / Beechtesgaden tour on Sunday. However there is a 70 percent chance of rain forecast. Would rain make this a rather miserable experience? I know the weather can impact the views as well.

Thanks,

Todd

If you have an option to go on a clearer day go for it. The view will be very disappointing on a cloudy day.

It is a wonderful side trip from Munich and I think educationally you would learn a lot regardless of the weather, but the view are amazing and would be a shame to miss. The altitude is so high you might be above the clouds!!! Here is hoping the weather report is incorrect!!

I've been up to the Eagles Nest three times and only once was there a clear, unobstructed view (one time it was so "foggy" you couldn't see the cross). When it's clear, the view is great. However, it was still an interesting experience being in a place that has such history. It was an eerie feeling knowing that Hitler had been in that same room. And the marble fireplace was a gift from Mussolini. I've had lunch there every time and, as I remember, the prices are reasonable.

Miserable? Except for the walk from the bus to the tunnel, you will be inside.

If you are going to see the views, maybe there's a way to find out in advance what the visibility is. If you are going to see the Documentation Center and bunkers, it doesn't matter. If you are going mainly for the views . . .

I just did a quick search and found this

We were just there in May and the tour was amazing and informative. We actually had some snow and had a great time.. view is spectacular. We hiked up to the cross and had a few clouds but made for some beautiful pictures. Hope you have a good time

It's more likely to be in or below the clouds than above them.

Todd,

Even if the weather is miserable the day you're in Berchtesgaden, you'll still be able to see a lot of the historic sites there. As Lee pointed out, with the Eagle's Nest visit you'll be inside so shouldn't get wet. If you also visit the Dokumentation Centre & Bunkers, you're inside for the most part there, so the weather won't be much of a concern. You can still enjoy the town of Berchtesgaden in the rain, but be sure to pack along some light rain gear if that's what the forecast calls for.
