Berchtesgaden

Heading from Munich to stay in Berchtesgaden for a few days with the family ( 4 adults ). Wanted to know if I can rent a car in Berchtesgaden? Can't seem to find any info about that. Can I take the train to Freilassing and then get a car there and drive to Berchtesgaden? I'm headed to Vienna via train after the stay in Berchtesgaden. We're doing a few day trips from Berchtesgaden and planning on visiting all the local sights in that area.
Thanks for any information!

When I was looking last summer I couldn’t find a good option in Berchtesgaden. We ended up renting at the Saltzburg train station and that worked well.

I've been to Berchtesgaden four times, and I never needed a car any of those times times. The public transit in Berchtesgaden is really good. It's really a matter of learning the routes and the schedules.

My wife and I spent 13 days in Berchtesgaden in 2019 and are headed back soon, making travel plans now.
You can rent a car in Freilassing, not that far to Berchtesgaden. If you need a car for something special or attending an event, I understand, but not sure you need to rent a car for the sites, as everything is reached by bus. They have one of the best bus systems in the world, and actually the bus and train system throughout Europe, in my opinion are the best in the world!. In Berchtesgaden, very stop that you can imagine is on the bus schedule. And if you book a room in Berchtesgaden your room card will give you free access to the system. I was very happily surprised with the bus service. Quick too. Buses leaves the train station, the downtown district and pretty much everywhere, often for the Obersalzberg, the Konigssee, and everywhere downtown. There is also bus service to Ramsau, Bad Reichenhall and other small villages.
Either way, you will be visiting one of my very favorite places on the face of the earth. I went to Berchtesgaden only because of World War II history and the Obersalzberg, came back falling in love with the market town of Berchtesgaden. You and your family will not be disappointed. The very large, jagged peaks of the surrounding mountains rising all around you, while sitting in the town square sipping coffee or drinks is amazing.

I'm not too worried about a car getting around Berchtesgaden but we would like to take some day trips to Hallstatt and possibly Zell am See? It looks like I'll need a car for those trips as the train takes a significantly longer time,

I think a car would be super convenient in that area. We stayed in nearby Ramsau and loved having a car. LMK if you want any details about out time there. It was awesome

We also stayed in nearby Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden (5 different trips) and found a car very convenient. Drive the Rossfeld Panorama Road just above Berchtesgaden. You’ll also find a fun Sommerrodelbahn in this area.

We’ve done day trips to both Hallstatt and Zell am See from Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden. On the way “home” from Hallstatt we stopped in Salzburg for dinner. Zell am See is maybe 1:30 drive. We rented an electric boat to cruise the lake on our own. This is right on the lakeside promenade in Zellam See. So picturesque!
