Belgium to West Germany. Which cities are must sees?

We will be departing out of Brussels, and have 4-5 days in Germany until we need to head back to Germany. Would ideally like to stay in one or two places as a 'home base' and do day trips from there. What I need help with is figuring out which cities are the best to have as those bases, and what realistic day trips from them would be.

Originally my husband had Cologne and Nuremberg on the list, but that has since changed into our German interests being more so Heidelberg, Trier, Bacharach, Wurzburg and seeing Burg Eltz. Since doing some research on here I've heard Boppard and St Goar mentioned a bunch as well, and I'm unsure on what to narrow it down to. We tend to love visiting castles, large estates, cathedrals, anywhere with a great view, and enjoy a break from walking with a river/canal cruise when applicable.

We purchased very last minute plane tickets, as we leave in just 2 weeks! Suggestions and opinions welcome. Would love to know what you would do given a 4-5 day travel window in the area, what could be done as a day trip, where we should base ourselves, etc. Thank you!

Everything you seem to focus on is near the Rhine and Mosel Valleys - so St. Goar is very good. It has a ferry across the Rhine so you can cross and go on the train on the east side too. Or rent a car for a day and head off to the Mosel/Burg Eltz. The Marksburg is IMO the best/most authentic castle in the area.
