Munich is (as you probably know) a major city for beer lovers. Yes, there's the Hofbrauhaus, world famous, and mainly crowded with tourists who go there because it's famous and they don't know where else to go. But you could easy make a major "pub crawl" just visiting the iconic Munich brew houses inside the old city walls. There's Hackerhaus (Hacker-Pschorr), Lowenbrau, Augustiner (multiple locations, try the one between the church and hunting museum), Spaten (by the Opera), and Paulaner (by the McDonalds). Then there are the "smaller" independents; the Ratskeller, Schneiders (one of my favorites, by the old city hall), the Biergardens in the English Garden (one by the Chinese Gate, the other (best) up by the lake), the Kaisergarden (up by the university), the original Lowenbraukeller (over by the museums), and probably 300 other little bars of one kind or another all within a couple miles of the Bahnhoff. The area of Schwabing, north of the museums and around the University, caters to students and prices are lower than in the city center. Likewise across the river in the Haidhausen district.

For a real experience it's Doner Kebab or Weinerwald sometime after 10pm.

March is a bit early in the beer season, but a great time for the dark beers. Dunkle, or Doppelbach's, are heavier than most Americans are used to but have great nutty flavor. Be advised it will be cold, either raining or snowing at least every other day, and they get a good wind too. Still one of my favorite cities! Have fun.

If you are expecting to have good food you will be disappointed in the brew Haus mentioned. We liked Weisses Brauhaus. The food was excellent--white asparagus soup was a specialty and salads were very nice. We went for lunch but if you plan to go for dinner you will need to reserve.

There are all kinds of different pub crawls and beer hall tours available. Have you looked on Trip Advisor or perhaps just Google? Just book direct with the tour company though and not with Viator or Trip Advisor.
