Need some ideas as to where to go for a beer festival in southern Germany. We will be in Venice the first week of October and would like to take in a German beer fest in one of the small towns near the boarder. Our plan would be to rent a car and drive to where there was one and stay a night before going on to Croatia. Any and all ideas greatly appreciated. Thank you

The fests usually aren't specifically beer-themed. More like harvest festivals, but this being Bavaria, beer tends to be a important component.
I'm not sure what day Oktoberfest in Munich ends, but Cannstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart runs until 11 October. This is very similar to Oktoberfest, but because it isn't as well known internationally, it doesn't attract all the annoying frat-boy types who flock to Munich's festival.
Most of the smaller towns in the Alps have various festivals in the summer. October gets towards the transitional period when weather may not be as dependable for hosting large outdoor events.
