Hi All. I know any location can have bedbugs, but I'm curious to know if this is a common problem in Europe... specifically Germany. A recent vacation in NYC made me totally paranoid and nervous about staying in any hotel. Just wondering if I should go through the whole rigamarole of investigating for bugs when checking into the various hotels on my upcoming two-week vacation in Germany/Austria. Anyone have recent issues with this?
As you just said they can be anywhere. I have never had what looks like a bed bug bite in Europe. I have in the states.
There are no guarantees. We have researched a couple university websites to get advice on how to keep from potentially bringing them home. We keep our luggage off the floor and off the beds. We empty our suitcases directly into the washing machine once home: washing and drying the clothes with heat. We wrap our suitcases in black plastic and give them several days in the sun once we are home. We do these things and take other reasonable steps like mattress covers.
In the hundreds of hotels I've had in Europe, I've never noticed any sign of a bedbug. Your experience was just an isolated incident.
Awesome news! Thanks for your replies.
Hi,
Never encountered that in Germany in 22 trips since 1971, ( the last trip this past June, ) regardless of staying in HI hostels, university dorms, Pensionen, or 3-4 star hotels.
In one hotel I used in Germany, there was a discreet sign in the lobby explaining that they check for bedbugs.
I am afraid this is a New York specialty, have never heard of bedbucks in German hotels.
