Like just about everything else this summer, the Bayreuther Festspiel was cancelled due to Covid. Like other arts orgs (The Met, and others), they are streaming past performances from previous years. So for interested Wagnerites, they are available for a modest fee of 4.90 EUR, (5.75 USD) at https://bayreuth.dg-stage.com. Since my tickets from 2015 were about $250 for each of 4 operas plus airline tickets, hotel and meals, it is not too bad a cost. 13 more streaming events through the end of the month, including two complete Ring cycles.
The first is of the Frank Castorf production from 2016, the same one I saw in 2015. If any of you remember my report, its the one where Valhalla, realm of the gods, is a Route 66 truck-stop/motel in Texas, and crocodiles crawl around Alexanderplatz in Berlin while Siegfried and Bruennhilde sing their love duet.
The other is the famous Patrice Chereau Centenary Ring from 1976. Revolutionary in its time, its a pretty tame interpretation now, in light of current trends.
Also on tap, Tristan und Isolde, Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger, Tannhaeuser, and Parsifal.
