I am arriving with 2 friends via flight in Munich, and then we plan on taking a train to Salzburg. Should I pre-purchase train tickets to get to Salzburg? Currently, I can get 3 tickets for 39 euros, selecting a specific time and train. It’s a great deal but I’m worried about the timing. Is the Bayern ticket flexible- if our flight arrives early or late could we jump on another train headed to Salzburg with the same ticket?
Should we just wait and buy them the morning we get there?

Yes! As long as it is a regional train.
The only €39 (for 3) fare I can find is for the Bayern-Ticket (it is shown on the Bahn website as a Savings Fare, but when you click on the "offer selection" you find it is the Bayern-Ticket). The lowest train specific fare I can find, even with 4 months advance purchase, is almost €60/3P.
The chance of losing an advance purchase, train specific ticket if you miss the train due to a late flight arrival or a delay in immigration or luggage retrieval is too great. There is no risk with a Bayern-Ticket. Plus, regional trains sometimes get you to Salzburg sooner than long distance trains.
The Bayern ticket is a one-day pass. You DO NOT "select a specific time and train"when you buy it.
You can travel on any and every local train (not IC, ICE) within Bavaria (and a few extra places like Salzburg)for the whole day.
Note the additional constraint that a Bayern ticket is valid only from 9 am on weekdays (whole day on the weekend and holidays).
When you purchase the Bayern-Ticket, you'll specify that it is for 1-5 people (and pay €7 extra for persons 2-5). There will be a place on the ticket for you to write the names of all the people traveling on the ticket.
