Bayern ticket versus VGN ticket

Hello

What's the difference between the Bayern ticket and a VGN ticket and when would you choose one over the other? (there are two of us, adults, traveling).

I was experimenting entering some routes into the DB Navigator app to see what it was coming up with regarding prices etc, it was showing the Bayern ticket for 26Euros, and it also displayed a VGN-Offers section in the booking tickets page, however its always greyed out unless the ticket is for today, can VGN tickets only be purchased on the day of travel?

The Bayern ticket covers Bavaria, the VGN ticket is just for Nürnberg and surrounding areas.

VGN = German acronym for Greater Nuremberg Transit Authority. Covers a pretty big area. As far west as Rothenburg o.d. T, as far north as Bayreuth, etc.

The map below shows the VGN zone area of travel for the very useful VGN day pass called the VGN Tagesticket Plus:

If you travel from inside the zone to Bavarian towns outside the zone - or vice versa - you would buy a Bayern Ticket instead to cover your whole route. Thus day trips between the towns paired below would call for a Bayern Ticket:

Nuremberg / Würzburg
Nuremberg / Regensburg
Nuremberg / Munich
