is the Bayern an "all you can ride for that day" ticket and not just one way? also, is Bayern ticket good for Berchtesgaden buses and for #840 back to Salzburg? I assume it's good for the train from B to S?
You can ride all day on the regional trains and buses, with these limitations/extensions:
- Monday to Friday, from 9 am until 3 am on the following day
- on weekends and public holidays, all day until 3 am on the following day
If you are going to go from Munich to Berchdesgaden and on to Salzburg for a day trip, you have to use the train, changing in Freilassing, Germany with a Bayern Ticket. Salzburg Hbf is considered a "Bavarian" train station for ticketing purposes. Any other form of transport would be Austrian and not valid with a Bayern Ticket. As far as local buses in Berchdesgaden, I believe they are covered.
To get an earlier start on a weekday, purchase a local transport ticket from Munich Hbf to Munich Ost station with the Bayern Ticket. That way, you can take the 8:55 train from the Hbf and by the time you get to Munich Ost after 9, the Bayern Ticket will be valid.
The Bayern-Ticket is only valid on the part of the Watzmann express (RVO 840) in Germany. To use it from Berchtesgaden, you would have to pay for the part in Austria.
If you are going from Munich to Berchtesgaden to Salzburg and want to use the Bayern-Ticket for the entire journey, you would have to go from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg by rail via Freilassing.
Incidentally, the last bus (840) from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg leaves Berchtesgaden at 6:15 PM. If you want to stay past that time, you have to go by rail to Salzburg.
There is another pass, called the BGL-TagesTicket Bus & Bahn, for 12,-€/P. It doesn't work from Munich to Berchtesgaden, but it gives you complete use of the trains between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden as well as the 840 bus between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden and most of the buses within Berchtesgaden.
All of the passes valid in Berchtesgaden - the Bayern-Ticket, the BGL-TagesTicket Bus & Bahn, and the RVO TagesTicket - are valid on most of the buses in Berchtesgaden, except buses 847, 848, and 849.
Also, Bayern is good for transport, including Trams in Munich after 9am? We arrive on a train at 8:40 and might want to store our bags and look around a bit prior to going to Berchtesgaden. I expect it would take until 9 to store our bags, buy the ticket and get to train/tram to take a ride to the old town area.
Also, Bayern is good for transport, including Trams in Munich after 9am?
Yes, a Bayern Ticket is valid for any means of transport in Munich: S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, and bus.
The entrance to the S-Bahn station is right next to the locker rooms off the end of track 26. I'd just go down into the S-Bahn station and take the next train two stops to Marienplatz. The #16 trams from the north side of the station also goes to Marienplatz, but takes longer on a more roundabout route (but you would get to see a bit more of Munich that way).
BTW, get off the train in Freilassing and take a train from there to Berchtesgaden. That trip will be covered by the Bayern-Ticket. If you go into Salzburg Hbf, the Austrian part of the RVO 840 bus will not be covered by the Bayern-Ticket.
