I'm debating getting a Bayern ticket for a portion of our travels. It is only good on regional trains. I'm looking at the time table and there is a train that say RE as well as ICE. The Bayern is not to be used on ICE trains. Because this train is an RE and ICE is it allowed?
Bamberg 14:04 1:59 1 RE, ICE 95,80 EUR
Disclaimer, I copied and pasted this information from another website:
Regional trains are all trains with the designating letters RB, RE, IRE, ALX, S-Bahn, BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn), M (Meridian). Note: Use of high-speed and long-distance trains with the designating letters IC, EC, ICE, D, RJ, TGV and night trains (designating letters CNL, EN) is not allowed.
Additionally the ticket allows the use of the underground trains (U-Bahn), suburban trains (S-Bahn), trams and public buses in Munich and other Bavarian cities and of almost all public regional bus services beyond Munich (RVO, SEV).
Bamberg 14:04 1:59 1 RE, ICE 95,80 EUR
When two (or more) types of train are mentioned, a part of the journey is by one type of train and a second with another train. If you click for more details, you'll undoubtedly see this journey involves a change of trains.
The train is to Bamburg, but from where? This might mean the trip requires a change of train somewhere, between an RE train and an ICE train. Youd need to look at the trip details to find out.
Edit Looks like I was typing while PP as posting.
Bamberg 14:04 1:59 1 RE, ICE 95,80 EUR
= Depart Bamberg 14:04, trip takes 1 hour 59 minutes, 1 change of train needed, 1st train RE, 2nd train ICE, price €95.80
As Ton says if you click "Show details" it will show you the two trains, where to change and the platform numbers. But as the second train is an ICE, if you are using a Bayern ticket you can't get on this second train.
On the DB website ( https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml ), after you enter from and to there is an option "Local transport only". If you tick this, it will only show trains for which your Bayern ticket is valid.
When you click on that "local transport only" button, the other train will be an RE. The ICE is nonstop from Nuremberg to Munich, but the RE makes 7 stops along the way, so it takes about 40 minutes longer to get there. In return for using that slower train, you save a lot of money.
Thanks! Been looking at so many schedules I'm going cross eyed!
