Is it worth it to take tours of Neushwantstein, Hohenschangau, and Linderhof, or is touring the grounds enough? I am trying to do all in one day.
We are going to Bavaria/Tirol in September and plan on visiting the castles. I asked a similar question on this forum and got varied answers; from it is a wasted day because Neuschwanstein isn't a "real" castle to it is an awesome experience.
What I am saying is, if YOU think it is worth it, then do it. Everyone's experience and expectations are different. BUT, how often do you get to visit Cinderella's castle?? My granddaughter is a typical girlie girl so she LOVES princesses; her only request was pictures Cinderellas castle.....what Oma wouldn't honor that request???
Read up on the history and it may be more interesting for you. Personally, I find the story fascinating!
I have not been to Linderhof and do not know how far away from Fussen it is. I toured both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The exteriors of both are magical. I loved the tour of Hohenschwangau. The interior is lovely and we got a lot of info on the family. Neuschwanstein was underwhelming inside. It was made more interesting by having the Hohenschwangau tour first. The exterior of Neuschwanstein is stunning. If I skipped touring the inside, I am the type of person who would always wondering if I would have liked the tour. If you were going to skipped the interior of one, I would say Neuschwanstein. I think there might have been a deal to do both, also, I think you could tour both in a morning.
I have been to all three and my response would be to take the horse wagon
up to the bridge and get some great pics of Neuschwanstein and enjoy a
casual walk down(the inside of castle is kind of a waste of time with the total
time needed for tickets, crowds & cost and not much wow factor) Then go over
to Linderhof for a nice lunch, walk the grounds and take the short castle tour. This
would make for an enjoyable day.

What do you mean by "do"? It is possible to check all three off your list in one day, but IMO, having been to all of them at a slower rate, you can't really experience all three in one day.
Only seeing the outside of Neuschwanstein instead of the inside too is like "kissing your sister".
When I visited Linderhof, I spent maybe 35 minutes on the inside tour, but I spent half a day seeing the Grotto and the grounds.
Too much for only one day - travel time to each castle, seeing 3 castles the same day - enjoyment of the day would be greatly diminished.
Lee posted "When I visited Linderhof, I spent maybe 35 minutes on the inside tour, but I spent half a day seeing the Grotto and the grounds." It was the same for me. I enjoyed the inside tour especially as Linderhof was built solely as Ludwig II's personal getaway, but I spent most of my time enjoying the grounds and the outlying variously-themed buildings. I highly recommend Linderhof.

I don't know whether or not you would benefit from the interior of Neuschwanstein; not a must for me. But the exterior, especially with the dramatic location, should not be missed.
The horse carriages only go to the restaurant just below the castle. From the upper terminus of the carriage ride, it would be a long steep walk up to the bridge. If you want to go to Mary's bridge, you need to take the bus from the village of Hohenschwangau.
Take the bus to Mary's Bridge. If you want to take a horse carriage, so so on the way down - half price!
