Visiting the Munich area in September and would love to spend a night or two in a castle. We will be driving the Romantic Road back to Frankfurt for our departing flight back to LAX and this would be a great closure to an amazing trip. Any recommendations?
Real castles had outhouses. Is that really what you want?
The best "castle" experience on the Romantic Road is Harburg.
BTW, Harburg is on the rail line between Donauwörth and Nördlingen, but there is no public transportation in town and it's about a 1 km walk from the Bahnhof to town, then a short, steep walk up to the castle. If you are driving, you can drive right up to a lot just below the castle.
Those real castles all have electricity now too, and running water, and paved access roads.
It is called modernizations for visitors who may not want to ride up to the castle on an oxen cart, alighting with their candle in a lantern, making their way to a straw sack bed, shared with 5 other strangers.
Yes, Jo. Sleeping on a straw sack bed. That sounds like the real castle experience.
I stayed several times at the Castle Inn in Olean, NY. It had a restaurant built to look like a castle, complete with towers and crenelated walls. (It also had running water and electricity, but no straw beds.) Does that count?
Here's another possibility: Burg Colmberg, east of Rothenburg; homey, Franconian castle, €79-185
