Bavarian Alps, Austria and..?

Hi everyone!

Last year we planned a whirlwind family trip with your help (London/Paris/ Switzerland/ Venice/ Rome..whew!). We are looking at doing it again for 2 weeks in June. Looking at what we enjoyed the most, it was def hands down our 3 nights in Wengen. It was breathtakingly beautiful and something we hope to recreate this time around.

Plan is to do a much more relaxed girls trip with my mom (hence the 70yrs) and sis this time (And 10 yr old nephew!). We will be relying on public transport. Possibly an open jawed ticket (Fly into Munich/ Fly out Vienna?).

MUSTS: Relaxation, View of the Alps, Stay at small quaint villages, open air farmers markets, cooler climate etc. and maybe throw in one city to balance it all out and some fun activities for nephew (playing in snow/ luge)

Thinking of:
Flying into Munich - 3 nights
Mittenwald - 4 nights ( this is the "quaint small town", "breathtaking view of alps", Wengen replacement). Suggestions welcome if this is the right fit! Day trip to Fuessen to see Neuschwanstein Castle. Also would like to see the Romantic Road, haven't worked it out yet.
Salzberg - 3 nights
Vienna - 3 nights

I have 2 extra nights, where do I fit it in? Was thinking of adding either Wengen/ Murren or maybe Prague/ Budapest? Would like to avoid too many changes of hotels so decided against it.

Any thoughts on this initial itinerary would be helpful. Thanks so much!

Love Mittenwald! Gorgeous alpine scenery and postcard perfect village.

I also like Innsbruck or at least the Innsbruck area for 2 nights. We've stayed at the Gasthof Badl in nearby Hall in Tirol (10-15 minutes away from Innsbruck) 5 times for a total of 18 nights and are going back this year.

Do the Nordkettenbahn trip while in the area.

I also suggest adding on Innsbruck. It is in the area so wouldn't take too much extra travel time. We stayed there 2 nights and had a great time. We were able to hike in the Alps, but even if not hiking you can take the funicular up the mountain and enjoy the views. Great food, scenery, shopping -- I'd say just about something for everyone in an area easy to navigate.

I love Mittenwald too, but it looks s nothing like Wengen, just so you know what to expect.

For your two extra nights, I would add them to any of your existing stops. There is so much to do in the area. We spent five nights in Mittenwald and didn't get to see everything we wanted.

Wengen and Murren are too far for two days. Prague or Budapest could work if you are satisfied just seeing the highlights.

Appreciate the feedback everyone! (and love those photos!) Some followup questions/points:

1) The reason we hadn't added Innsbruck was that I read it was often the first suggestion to "skip". If so many people on the forums are suggesting to skip it, I thought it wasn't a "must do"
2) Mittenwald was chosen because I thought it would be closest to the Wengen feel!! Any other towns I should consider?
3) I am also open to not going to Munich altogether if there are other interesting areas around. Chose it just for the convenience of flying in and proximity to these other places.
4) Yes of course! Wasn't intending to do both Wengen and Murren. Was just thinking if we should take those 2 extra nights + skip Munich and just to Switzerland (repeat Wengen or go to Murren this time) and Austria.

Mittenwald was chosen because I thought it would be closest to the
Wengen feel!!

IMHO the only areas with the same WOW factor are parts of the French Alps and the Dolomites.

Salzburg - 3 nights
Vienna - 3 nights

I would add at least(!) one night to Vienna, which offers much more than Salzburg, and would do a day trip to the Wachau for example.

If you are really into Switzerland, why not

Fly into Zurich , train directly to Bernese Oberland area 5 nights

Luzern 3 nights

Salzburg - 3 nights

Vienna - 4 nights

Everything you want with minimal hotel changes and public transport...

Have a great trip!!!

Last year I stayed at Hotel Wiesenhof in Mieders, Austria. I cannot recommend this place enough! The town itself is quaint, and picturesque right up against a gorgeous mountain. They have an "Alpine Coaster" that was one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life, and you can also sit at the top and gaze at the sky reflected in the 2 ponds, or slowly hike down the mountainside. In the morning you can hear the cow bells and smell the fresh air. Also, they have an amazing breakfast where they serve their homemade jams and jellies (30+ kinds)!!!!

I personally would do:
Munich - 3 nights
(Neuschwantstein on the way to Mieders)
Mieders - 2 nights (You can also spend the second night going to dinner and exploring Innsbruck...only 20 minutes away)
Salzberg - 2 nights (first day for Salzberg/2nd you can do your own Sound of Music Tour!)
Cesky Krumlov - 2 nights (It's super cute and has tons of stuff to do. The castle is amazing. Take the baroque theatre tour. Lunch at a restaurant on the river. If the weather permits, you can do a raft excursion down the river. They'll take you up as far as you would like to go, and you just float down to your end spot).
Vienna - 4 nights. One of the days, take a train to Melk and bike through the valley by the Danube!
(In all honesty, I would trade Vienna for Budapest any day. It's my favorite (well, and Amsterdam).

Have you considered Garmish-Partenkirchen? It's super cute as well.
