Bavaria - Southern and Northern Bavaria (itinerary help)

Hi

My husband and I will have a week in Bavaria, after a day visit to Munich. We wonder what would be the best places to go. We likenatural beauty, good food, and music. thanks.

We are thinking of splitting the week into two parts-- say 4 days in southern Bavaria, say Garmisch and 3 days in northern Bavaria (say Franconian Switzerland). I read up blogs and forums and like southern bavaria but would need advise if along with that we should do northern side or some other part of Bavaria or spend the whole week in Southern Bavaria?

We want to end out trip in Amsterdam and we will be renting a car.

Now, first question is, which town to make as a base for visiting these two areas, if you suggest that they arw good.

And, which towns/villages to visit in those regions.

Do we need to buy any passes/tickets to see the sites beforehand?

We are a bit late in arrangin this trip, we are leaving on 3rd June night. Sorry for a hurried request of info.

We lived in Augsburg (50miles west of Munich) for four years and traveled all over Bavaria. It is great.

Southern Bavaria (bottom of Romantic Road)
Oberammergau, Fussen and Garmisch. There are three famous castles there in the area, the Zugspitze and home of the famous Passion Play.

Southern Bavaria (farther east of RR) Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, Austria. Also, stop on the way and see the Palace at Chiemsee.
The Eagle's Nest, bunkers, then Salzburg to see the famous castle, Cathedral and Mozart's home.

Eastern Bavaria
Passau and Regensburg. Regensburg is a gem. An ancient Roman city with much to see.

Northern Bavaria

Nuremburg, Bamberg, Wurzburg. If you loved Wagner, Bamberg is the place. Nuremburg where the WWII trials were held as was Hitler's rally ground. Wurzburg is another gem.

Western Bavaria

Rothenburg on the Tauber, Donauwurth, Dinkelsbuhl and the Romantic Road (Wurzburg to Garmisch)

Can't see all in 7 days. Most people do the Southern part. The Romantic Road early part of Rothenburg, Donauwirth and Dinkelsbuhl can be done in 1-2 days.

I love Garmish-Partenkirchen. But, Southern Bavaria gets all the press because of the Alps and the history in Munich. However, if you like small towns, local culture and scenery like where most Germans actually live, Northern Bavaria around Nuremberg is superb (Franconia).

Nuremberg is great - very historic although rebuilt like Munich.

The Frankische Schweiz to the northeast of Nurnberg is also great hiking/bicycle country with paths along all of the major roads. Other wise you will want to rent a car to get around fora day or two.

Because of your timing I have included a link to the oldest beer festival in Germany (began in 1755, long before the Octoberfest) the Berche in Erlangen just north of Nurnberg.

Maybe we will see you there.

Prosit!

For Frankonia you want to base out of Nuremberg. You can easily hit Erlangen, Wurzburg, Bamberg, Ansbach, Bad Windsheim, and the surrounding area from there. I highly recommend a day trip to Bad Windsheim and then to Ansbach, and home to Nuremberg as a good round trip; easily done. Erlangen is a University town with great bike paths, so if you want a neat way to get around I recommend that. Bamberg and Wurzburg are the other two "bigger" cities and excellent destinations on their own.

Down south I'd suggest Ulm. Close to Munich, close to Augsburg, and not a tourist town, and better for it.

Remember, weissewurst are a lunchtime meal, no later, in Frankonia. Wine is also very regional, with a white that's almost green up north, and it's fairly sweet.

I like Gößweinstein and Pottenstein in the Fränkischen Schweiz as a base to relax. You can venture into Forchheim for a larger city. You should consider the Franken Wein region too. Wine towns like Priechsendstadt, Iphofen, Volcach etc. With a car you could do both regions with the Steigerwald in-between with three full days. This would be an alternative to larger cities, More of a German tourist area in Germany. The next 10 days are supposed to be "summer" like.

I have a quick question, Northern Bavaria which town/village/ city (scenic, lush green) would be nice as a base?

Travelling tomorrow would reallllly appreciate and early suggestion.

Funf Seidla Steig beer hiking trail in the Franconian Schweiz. Access via the train from the Nuremberg Nordbahnhof.

Sorry for the pedantry: it is Nuremberg Nordostbahnhof (accessible from the center by U2). From the Nordbahnhof you would have to take the freight train ;)

(BTW, in Gräfenberg, the second "stop" of the Fünfseidlasteig, there are three breweries. Skip two of them and try the Lindenbräu Vollbier; they still are making their own malt, und you will taste the difference).

Not pendantry. Operated from memory and neglected to check facts. But did recall that Nordostbahnhof is not linked to the Hbf except by U-Bahn.

In Garmisch take advantage of one or more of the many lifts up into the mountains with good weather; Zugspitz, Wank, Alpspitz. Mittenwald is a short drive away. For a morning or evening walk in Garmisch try the Rießersee (old Olympic Winter site (Bob and Hockey) and the Maximilianshöhe walk to include the Kriegergedächtniskapelle. Your call on anything else outside of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area (Schloss Linderhof) etc.

I like the Platz am Tiergärtnertor in Nürnberg by the huge bronze rabbit and Albrecht-Dürer-Haus. It gets good sun in the morning. I like to go out the Tiergärtnertor around the wall there past the Hexenhause and into the back/outside entrance of the castle. I agree with the Krakourtor and Biergarten. Checkout the 7 houses not destroyed in the bombing in the Altstadt and have a exploring walk along the Pegnitz. Easy to spend a day or two wandering around Nürnberg. Lots of stuff to see in/along the way to Fürth and Erlangen, but this late may be too late.
