Bavaria/Austria 5 Day Itinerary Help

Hello,

My wife and I will be flying into Munich in May 2019. We are dedicated two days to Munich because we are visiting a family member. The other three days we’d like to go off and do travel outside of Munich before traveling back for our flight out.

A little about us. We are 29 and 37 from the US (Chicago) and we both enjoy low key slower travel (walking on foot, enjoying the food and beer scene, learning history) . We like scenic areas such as mountains, rolling hills, etc. but due to some bad joints can’t hike too much so we like areas we can enjoy by cable car or car. We get overwhelmed in areas where there is a large language barrier or have to coordinate complex travel. We want our trip to contain a good mix of activities without feeling rushed so with that said we need help narrowing down the things we should do from our list. All opinions are welcome.

Things we’d like to do (outside of Munich)

  • Dachau Concentration Camp
  • Rothenberg - concerned this is too far. Is it worth it?
  • Salzburg
  • Berchtesgaden

We also considered Hallstatt but ultimately it seems too far and stressful for just a nice picture. We at one point were interested in garmisch partenkirchen but we decided that we should pick between that or Berchtesgaden. We picked Berchtesgaden because it was closer to Salzburg and I liked the WWII history it offered. It also seemed to be prettier to me from pictures but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Please chime in with your opinions and if there are any other suggestions we have missed. We’d love to eliminate anything too touristy or tacky but also don’t want to miss something we could never experience elsewhere.

Thanks!

Rothenburg: too far, too touristy (tourism is its only purpose these days.) But everything is available in the English language pretty much without asking, so it's a place that many monolingual US tourists feel more comfortable. Such comfort always comes with a price.

"We get overwhelmed in areas where there is a large language barrier..."

All the places you might visit are accustomed to welcoming visitors and normally contact persons in hotels, shops, and restaurants speak English more than adequately for your routine needs.

"The other three days we’d like to go off and do travel outside of Bavaria..."

Of your stated choices only Salzburg is outside Bavaria. But I don't think you meant outside.

Will you need to spend your 5th night in Munich in order to make a morning flight out? or do you have 3 full days/nights besides Munich?

The Garmisch-Partenkirchen area is both very nice and relatively close to Munich (1.3 hrs by direct trainto G-P) and is surrounded by nice places to visit (or stay) like Mittenwald, Oberammergau, Linderhof, Innsbruck, Benediktbeuern... The transportation network for this area is quite good and visiting other places would be simple and scenic:

The Ausserfern Railway (in the direction of Pfronten) takes a very scenic route on its way out of Garmisch:

Thanks so much Russ! Much appreciated. You are right, I meant outside of Munich not Bavaria. We will actually be there 7 days but I’ve dedicated two days just for traveling in and out so we will have a full 3 days to do what we want.

Dachau is a very short (30 minutes) train ride from the main train station in Munich. You can do this in the morning and be back in the city for a drink of two. Personally, I always find Dachau depressing, and there's things I'd prefer to doing that again.

Garmish is beautiful! It's one of my favorite places, and there's a lot more to do there than in Berchtesgaden. If you like slow paced sightseeing and cable cars that's Garmish. The view from the Zugspitz on a clear day is incredible. They have an area laid out just for sunbathing up at the top, and that's nice. Just pack sunscreen or tanning lotion.

Salzburg is just as close to Munich as Garmish (a couple hours travel). It's much smaller than Munich, and it's easy to walk around. They even have an incline railway up to the top of the fortress, so you don't have to climb. Again, one of my favorite places.

One place you might consider, about halfway to Salzburg, is Lake Chiemsee. This is a resort area for many Europeans and the scenery is fantastic. Spring is a great time to visit.

Things to keep in mind; spring is rainy season so pack accordingly. You can do Salzburg without a car. Both Garmish and Salzburg are closer than Rothenberg, and even though I lived 10 km from Rothenberg for years I'd recommend either over that tourist destination.

Very close to Munich, and a good day trip, is Augsburg. You could easy catch a train there, walk around, and return. The old town is pretty nice, and they have a huge park with a zoo and some nice trails to walk around. I like architecture, and Augsburg didn't get beat up as bad as a lot of other cities during WWII so it's interesting.
