We will be renting a car in Switzerland and returning it to Basel, then we want to rent a car in Germany and return it in Germany..in both cases to avoid the extra fees for dropping off in a different country than rented in. There appears to be a train from Basel SBB to Lorrach, but I am unable to find prices or schedules online. Has anyone else made that trip? If so, is it by tram, train, bus or combo. We are not young and do not like to wrestle suitcases onto trams and buses. Or if there is another way to accomplish this, we would be interested to know. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
It depends on the date you intend to travel

Linda, There are multiple stations in Lörrach, the one în the town centre is Lörrach Hbf, but just pick the one nearest your car pick-up.
This is a regular commuter route. There are two trains an hour from Basel SBB (at 04 and 34 minutes past the hour), via Basel Badischer Bahnhof, they then stop at all stations in Lörrach.
At Basel SBB they usually depart from platform 2 (Gleis 2). Destination "Zell", route code "S6".
NO change of trains is needed at Basel Badischer Bahnhof.
You can buy a ticket from a ticket machine, price CHF 4.70. That is a "2 zone", it is valid from any tram, bus or train stop in Basel to any stop in Lörrach.
Times are listed on both the SBB (Swiss railways) and DB (German Railways) website
Thank you so much. It is much simpler than I thought. So nice to be able to consult with experienced travelers!
