Base in Bayreuth or Bamberg for 2 nights

On our way by train from the Harz area to Munich, in October, we have 2 days to stay somewhere we’ve never been before. We are interested in exploring both towns and can get from one to the other in an hour by bus or train. What we’d like some help deciding is which town to choose for a base for two nights. We’d be arriving by midday, staying 2 nights and leaving midday for Munich where we are staying two nights before our flight home.

EDIT: We like art, history, music, beer, cultural food choices, charming towns and cities. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I have not been to Bamberg, so can't speak to that. But we did stay overnight in Bayreuth a few years ago, on our way to Dresden by car. For an overnight, we found Bayreuth charming. There is a Wagner walking tour (we did not take the complete tour, but saw the little Wagner statue several places) and the pedestrian area of town had a nice vibe to it. I don't know if there is enough to do for 2 nights, but it would be worth looking into it further.

Honestly I like them both. Why not spend one night at each rather than a train back and forth? Both have plenty of history and sites to see. Both are University cities. Though the populations are about the same, Bamberg feels bigger to me. I like the beer culture in Bamberg and shops and café. For me Bayreuth feels a little more youthful and quirky. The Bayreuth Altstadt is fun to stroll through. Enjoy the Franken region of Bavaria. Schäufele mit Kloß. Both are well worth visiting. I think you can't miss whatever you decide on.
