Base for Rhine and Mosel region for the weekend

My husband and 2 kids (11 and 12 years old) will be in the middle Rhine region for the weekend (arriving Friday evening April 3, 2020 from Düsseldorf and leaving Monday morning April 6, 2020 for Brussels).

I would like to spend a day in the Rhine region (boat tour, explore some popular castles, etc) and a day in the Mosel region (mainly to hike up to Burg Eltz and look at the castle). We will getting around by train and boat.

I’ve seen several posts about a good home base for Rhine region being Bacharach and St. Goar. Koblenz would be ideal but from what I have read there is “little charm” that most of us are looking for.

My question is, based on my itinerary (and short stay in this region) what home base do you recommend to make most efficient use of our time? I am trying to avoid moving around too much (back and forth) with our luggage while we are in that area for a short period of time.

Secondly, if we stay in St.Goar or Bacharach, are day trips to Burg Eltz doable with the intent of hiking up to the castle?

Lastly, what do you recommend going from Rhine Valley to Brussels?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and recommendations!

You might also consider Boppard. It is inside the the VRM tariff zone and Regional Express trains stop there, saving time and money. You will be able to use VRM tickets to get to Moselkern and back to hike to Burg Eltz. It is 23.60 EUR for a VRM Minigruppenkarte. Also check where you stay if they offer a free VRM Guest Card, which will give you free use of transport in the VRM district (Oberwesel to Remagen on the Rhine, and to Traben-Trarbach on the Mosel).

Sam's right - stay in Boppard for free local train travel on the guest card and for ease of access to Burg Eltz (which can be combined with a visit to Cochem.) Boppard makes a visit to Marksburg Castle in Braubach easy as well - and Marksburg is perhaps the better example of medieval life. The guest card gets you there for free by train via Koblenz.

Boppard has a pleasant waterfront promenade with nice views, and a nice old town zone as well. Do the chairlift ride there too if you can.

Another vote for Boppard! We stayed at a great AirBnB (Alte Seilerei) with our two teens last summer. One day we took the train to St Goar, toured Burg Rheinfels, lunch by the river, train down to Bacharach. Then took the boat back to Boppard. The next day we went to Burg Eltz via rental car.

Boppard is only 20 minutes from Koblenz, and is very charming!
