Bamburg or Regensburg?

I am trying to decide which town to check out. We are a family of 4 with (2) teen boys (16 and 12). Our base will be Nuremberg. Which do you prefer and why?
Thanks!

I loved both places, but a lot depends on your interests. Regensburg has more history, which I enjoyed. The tourist info center offers a tour of the Altes Rathaus (old town hall) that was really interesting, and your boys might like the included torture chamber and prison that is part of the tour. And unlike other places, it was not sensationalized—everything was based on history. The torture chamber was actually buried for hundreds of years, but was uncovered in the late 1800's, I believe. At any rate, there was a lot to do and a lot to see, and the city is just beautiful.

Bamberg was also quite beautiful and quaint. It has a gorgeous cathedral and was more fitted for just wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. The Altes Rathaus (old town hall) is a beautiful building with amazing frescos painted on it and well worth seeing, and there are some very good restaurants in town (of course, that could be said for Regensburg as well).

If you're really torn, I would suggest going on YouTube and looking for videos of each town. That's how I decided which places to go when I was there.

That is a good idea. I should mention that we will be there in February, if that matters.

I've been to both and preferred Bamburg, but we stayed overnight there and Regensburg was just a day trip. That probably colors my opinion.

does having smoked beer enter into your consideration or little sausages? The two cities have different attractions depending on what you like. One has the mighty Danube river flowing through it, the other has a smaller quainter river with an island that you cross... They really are quite different experiences. Because Bamburg is so close you could pop over there for a few hours and because Regensburg is a bit further take a whole day there.

The weather is going to suck no matter which you choose, so I'd think about what's indoors you'll enjoy. Bamberg is for beer and university girls. Regensburg has a golf museum. I'll suggest the boys might be a lot happier at Palm Beach Therme in Nuremberg where they can hit the slides and wave pools and you can soak in a hot tub while it snows and they bring you drinks.

Our favorite German town is Regensburg but the scenery in Bamberg is more dramatic.
