We are basing out of Nuremburg, and have time for two day trips via train. Primary focus would be history, architecture, photography......... . Have looked at photos of all three and just can’t agree on which two to pick. I know it’s subjective, but which would you recommend?
I’ve visited Bamberg numerous times and it’s architecture is beautiful - lots of photo ops throughout the old city. Love the City Hall on the island, Maximilian Platz and, of course, the rauchbier. Very impressive cathedral with the statue of the Dom Reiter. Definitely my first choice.
Bamberg is in the VGN district, so 2 to 6 people can travel all day for 20.30 EUR with a VGN TagesTicket Plus.
The other two need a Bayern Ticket, 32 EUR for 2, then 7 EUR for each additional person up to 5 total traveling together.
Bamberg for beer, Wurzburg for wine, Regensburg for fish. They are all great cities to visit, but deserve more than a day. For that I'd recommend Ansbach, which was once the head of Bavaria and is not on the tourist radar. A very pretty city. Also there's Ingolstadt with it's fantastic walls and BMW Museum. And Bayreuth...or Amberg...
I’ve been to all three - in December - and loved Regensburg the most. My second choice was Bamberg. I was not a big fan of Wurzburg- it is not nearly as attractive as the other two, having many modern buildings.
