Bamberg to Munich: 2 day itinerary help!

Hello, We are visiting Rhine Valley, Berlin and Bamberg in Sep. We still have to finalize our last 2 days before flying out from Munich and would love some suggestions.

We are spending 2 days (Sep 14,15) in Bamberg. We fly out of Munich late afternoon on Sep 18 (no interest in Munich for this trip as we have been there before). I would appreciate suggestions for Sep 16-17. We have a car rental reservation with pick up in Bamberg and drop off in Munich airport. We thought maybe we could visit Rothenburg and Nuremburg in the last 2 days and a car would provide more flexibility.

Any suggestions welcome!

Rothenburg and Nürnberg are good choices. I love to visit the area.

You might also consider Regensburg and Landshut. Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Medieval buildings including its Gothic Cathedral. There are also some Roman ruins in town. Landshut is a delight for the eye with its many Baroque building facades and castle.

If the weather is nice a good way to spend the day around Nürnberg is to do the Five-Seidla-Trail (http://www.vgn.de/en/hiking/seidla).

The "Fünf-Seidla-Steig" is a hiking trail which connects five Franconian breweries (Seidla = half a liter of beer). You can do a 20 km round trip or walk one way (10km).

Franconia has the highest concentration of breweries in the world including one of my favorite (which is part of the Fünf-Seidla-Steig), Gräfenberg.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you think renting a car is a good idea? We have the rental but can cancel if it is not needed

We lived in Germany and liked traveling by our own car. Now that we are just visiting, we prefer the train, especially for seeing towns. These towns are better set up for pedestrians than motorists in my opinion. Plus train travel is a different, new challenge for us.

We though of using car just between towns, not within. For example, Bamberg to Rothenburg by train seems very complicated.

I'd say you don't really need a car to spend 2 days getting from Bamberg to Munich airport. Trains are frequent and direct, for example you can get to Nuremberg in less than an hour and from Nuremberg to Regensburg in just over an hour. The train coverage in this area is pretty comprehensive so there really is not many places of note that require a car.

Hi, How about Bamberg to Rothenburg or Nuremburg to Rothenburg? I am not able to figure out the train route without several stops.
Thanks!

Bamberg to Rothenburg is 2 transfers, which can seem daunting the first time. It really is not. There is plenty of time for the connections. Rothenburg is on a spur line and Steinach is a small station. Just about everyone who gets off there, is catching the the train to Rothenburg. Just follow the crowd.

Nürnberg to Rothenburg is likewise 2 stops. Time is a little tighter but still easily doable.

I am in my 70's and have arthritis in my knees. I do not run between trains. I have visited Rothenburg 7-8 times in the last dozen years. I only missed a connection once due to mechanical issues. I just waited until the next departure in one hour.

Bamberg to Rothenburg by train seems very complicated.

It might seem so, but it's not. You only have to change trains in two stations (Würzburg and Steinach) and you have plenty of time. The platforms are clearly marked.

The driving instructions on ViaMichelin are far more complicated. I counted at least five places coming out of Bamberg where you have to turn at the correct street, then there were at least a half dozen road changes from Bamberg to Rothenburg.
