Bamberg: Suggestions for a Day Trip.

Hi - Does anyone have any suggestions for an easy day trip to Bamberg that does not have to do with beer?

Thank you!

We have visited Kulmbach, Kronach & Bayreuth from Stephen's list and enjoyed them all.

Kulmbach & Kronach both have castles and interesting small towns below. I liked the town of Kulmbach better; the walk up to the castle is steeper. I think Kulmbach would be a fuller day's visit. Kulmbach is famous for its beer but that does not dominate its culture. We spent 2 days there and may go back someday.

Coburg is on our todo list.

Bamberg has a beautiful cathedral and a historic town hall with beautiful frescos. I found that the best part of Bamberg was just walking around and enjoying the streets, the sights, the shopping and the people. It is a very charming and lovely place and well worth a visit. It was a quick 40 minute train ride from Nuremberg.

But definitely see the cathedral, especially the tomb of Heinrich II and Kunigunde, which was carved by master sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider.

If you like, here is a link to the post I wrote in my online travel journal about Bamberg (with photos). https://mostlytraveled.wordpress.com/2022/05/02/day-8-day-trip-to-bamberg/

Spent 3 days in Bamberg and never had a beer. Wandered around the old town, visited ancient churches, took a ton of photos, ate delicious food.

You don't have to drink the Bier, but you should look into one of the local Wirtshaus like the Brauerei Fässla or Schlenkerla. Good Franken food, and after all you are in Bamberg. The small park by the Bamberg Tourist center is nice too.

We also did a day trip from Nuremberg by train. One of the few times we had nothing planned except to walk around this stunningly beautiful town. No regrets. We did try a smoked beer; I’ll stick with lox. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your day. Safe travels.

If it's warm, Bamberg has a pretty unique swimming lido on the river with a strong current but easy to get in and out of. Aside from the beer hiking (not your jam) it was the highlight of my last trip, but my two previous trips were pretty much centered on just walking around this beautiful city.

Markk's link will take up all your day and more. If you have never tried a rauchbier then give it a shot – share one with your partner at lunch. It is an acquired taste, and most of the brews have a strong medicinal quality to them. We had a drink here four or five years ago:

The best smoked beer I've had by far was on Vancouver Island at Spinnakers – the brewers there know there stuff. Subtle is best.

Bamberg is absolutely gorgeous. I could spend the rest of my life there. Fascinating history, gorgeous architecture, wonderful culture to the city. Have fun!
