Looking to take a quick look at Bamberg (4 hours?) between Erfurt and Munich by train. Suggestions ??
Also, any information on lockers at the train station ?
The main attractions listed in Wikipedia (Dom, Alte Hofhaltung, Kloster Michelsberg etc.) keep you busy half a day easily. Lockers are opposite track #1.
Thanks! We did a similar flying visit to Wurzburg on our way to Frankfurt on a prior trip.
Yes, did this with free stopover Munich/ Frankfurt for 4 hours. It's enough time to see highlights.
Walk is 20 min from station to canal.
Have plenty of coins for lockers as they won't give change free, 3 sizes of lockers, 2 euro, 1 euro, and 50 cent coins, multiples of each.
The best day trip guides I know of are written by Earl Steinbicker. Here is his Bamberg guide. You probably won't see it all.
The TI office issues an "i-tour".
Save the walk from the station into the old town by catching a bus. Scroll down and zoom in on the bus route network map at this page. There are maybe 6 bus lines (identified by color and number) that will get you to the ZOB (central bus station) where you will be closer to most places of interest.
Sample a Rauchbier (smoked beer). This is a famous specialty of the city, and despite intermittent and not particularly aggressive searching over four years of living in Germany, I never found it available anywhere else in the country except Bamberg.
