Bamberg and Coburg

We will be staying 4 nights (3 full days) in Wurzburg in early December and plan on taking a couple of day trips - one to Rothenberg and then another to Bamberg. After reading Tom's trip report on Coburg (great report, btw!), I'm now thinking that we could also see Coburg on the same day we travel to Bamberg. The castle in Coburg is only open 1pm-4pm, so I thought we could tour Bamberg in the morning, then catch the 45 minute train to Coburg.

Will we be short changing Bamberg if we only spend 2-3 hours there? I'm torn between seeing both towns, or just picking one - but then which one?! Decisions, decisions.

You could certainly fit both cities in one day, but you'll miss quite a bit. It's too bad Veste Coburg only opens for the afternoon. There's a little more to explore in Bamberg, and you could linger a longer over a Rauchbier. But given the opportunity, I wouldn't miss Veste Coburg. The town is very attractive too, but it doesn't take long to explore.

You could also do both by taking the train to Bamberg at 9:07, then stay 2 hours and continue on to Coburg at noonish, spend 3 hours there, then return to Bamberg for dinner and and exploring more there. Then a late train (21:00?) to Wuerzburg. All on a single Regio-Ticket Franken-Thueringen. 25 EUR for two people.

Thanks Tom and Sam! I really would like to see Veste Coburg, so I think we will venture to Coburg in the afternoon. On the train back to Wurzburg, we have to transfer in Bamberg anyway, so we will hop off and explore some more and try some of that Rauchbier. It should be fun to check out the Christmas markets in the towns too.

Gotta love those regional tickets - what a great deal!

Dawn- Where did you find your info on Veste Coburg? We will be there between Christmas and New Years and are wondering what the castle hours will be during that time frame. We also want to go to Bamberg to visit , but we will be based out of Bayreuth by then. Thanks,

Dan

Also I was just wondering if it would be possible to do Coburg, Bamberg and Wurzburg in one day or is that too much?
Thanks, Dan

Dan - I actually emailed the tourist information office and they were very helpful ( [email protected]) . This is their reply, (which matches what sla019 posted.

"The Veste Coburg will be open: Tuesday to Sunday: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Mondays closed as well as December 24, 25, 31 and Pancake Tuesday). The admission fee for one adult is 6,00 EUR. More information can be found: http://www.kunstsammlungen-coburg.de/en/kunstsammlungen-veste-coburg.php. Wishing you a pleasant stay in Coburg this December - and don’t miss our Christmas Market which will take place on our Market Square."

In answer to your other question, I do think that Wurzburg, Bamberg and Coburg would be too much for one day - at least it would be for me. I think it depends on what you want to do in each town. Will you have a car or traveling by train?

Dan - Are you actually going to see anything in those towns, or just stop in the town so you can say you were there? I spent an entire day in Würzburg alone.

I think what we may try to do is Coburg/Bamberg one day and Wurzburg/Iphofen another day. Then maybe Rothenburg/ Nordlingen another also We are also trying to squeeze in a trip to Regensberg too. WHat do you think?

Everyone has their own travel pace. My wife and I try to spend a couple days in most towns that we visit. Often our fondest memories are how a town looks in the evening.

Rothenburg in Advent

Nördlingen this April

A quick day trip seldom does it for us. Might be different for you.

Just one person's opinion, and my first post nonetheless, but I was stationed in Bamberg for 2 years in the 80's. It's a beautiful city and I will be there my self in mid December. I'm giving it full day to show my GF the sites.

We are in Rothenburg right now. The Christmas markets opened last night. So beautiful. We had a day and a half here and it was just about right. Nightwatchman's tour the night we got in and walked the city wall and explored/shopped the next day. What a beautiful city. On our way here from Munich, we spent about 4 hours in Regensburg. Just stored our luggage at the station and headed into town.
We were in Bamburg a few days ago for a day and a half as well. Although the city is small, a few hours seems to short. To get to the older portion with all the cathedrals (Domberg, Jakobsberg and Michealsberg) you need to take a bus or two (it took us about 20 minutes to our hotel in Domberg, we had to change buses in town) or walk about 15 into the main part of town, another 5 or so to the older part. And be prepared for some hills.
