Bamberg Altstadt Parking

Hi ,

I'm looking for carpark in Bamberg Altstadt for Friday 17th of July just for 2-3hours.
1. Has anyone parked in Stadarchiv carpark? Is it open for tourists as it's actually a public facility? It says it's free parking but perhaps we'd need certain local sticker for this?

  1. Also, I see from gmap there's a parking around Domstrasse. It doesn't belong to the Dom so I'm not sure if it's public parking area. If anyone could share and the cost for parking there too?

  2. Any other recommendation especially ones near the Alte Rathaus and Klein Venedig area?

Cheers

I'm pretty certain the parking around the Dom is only for permitted vehicles, but I'm not positive.

The easiest option is probably one of the underground garages for the department stores on the island, like Karstadt. As always with any German city, just follow the blue parking signs as you drive into the city. It's much simpler just to follow these signs than to try to map it out in advanced. Believe it or not, Germany really doesn't want drivers to get lost. Despite the labyrinthine layout of streets, most of the cities and towns are surprisingly easy to navigate (Munich is the one big exception). The signs point exactly where you need to go.

I agree with Tom, the last time I parked in Bamberg I just followed the signs to the city center and looked for the blue "P" parking signs and pull into one that had free spots. Even if you pick one before hand there is always the chance it might be full so you'll end up parking at another one anyway.

I did not find it difficult to navigate Bamberg by car.

Hi Tom and DJ

Thanks so much for the parking cue. I didn't think of local dept store before. What I did was zoom in using gmap, any parking spots I could find around the places I'd like to visit. How 'smart' of me >_< Thanks for easing my mind about the parking. I'm sure Germany has one of the best infrastructure in the world. They must have calculated everything including the signage & parking slots.

We parked in a public car park garage Hainstrasse and Friedrichstrasse, about a 5 minute walk to the Alstadt. But there is a parking garage closer to the old town near the tourism office on Geyersworthstrasse. I checked google maps and it looks like it's called City-Altstadt Tiefgarage. As we were walking, we saw parking around Domstrasse, near the Upper Parish (Obere Pfarre), and on other streets, but we couldn't tell if we would have been allowed to park there.

Hi Carol,

thanks so much for the info. Yes, I plan to park in Geyerworthstrasse too. Good to know there's a parking garage underneath as the open space parking seen from gmap seems very limited.

Last visit to Bamberg I parked at the underground garage in Maximilian Platz. Super convenient. Well marked directional signs even show the number of spaces available.
