What would be the cheapest way using a Baden-Württemberg ticket to get to Strasbourg via Offenburg?
Offenburg to Kehl and then pay individually from Kehl to Strasbourg?Trying to stretch out that pass! Thanks
Depends on where you are coming from. If nearby, a straight round trip Flex Preis ticket may be cheapest. Also of course, how many are traveling together.
I'll be coming from Offenburg.
As you have surmised, the Baden-Würtemberg ticket is valid as far as Kehl, the last station in Germany, but no further.
There is a map showing all the rail lines it is valid on, and how often the trains stop at each station here: https://www.bahn.de/p/view/mdb/bahnintern/angebotsberatung/regio/laender-tickets/pdfs/2018/mdb_270079_streckenkarte-badenwuerttemberg_a2-bwegt-look-rz.pdf
You options to get to Strasbourg from Kehl station are:
1) Buy a ticket from Kehl to Strasbourg. The DB website says this costs €4.30. You can probably buy this at Offenburg or another station, before you get on the train, so you can stay seated on the train at Kehl.
2) Get a tram, which stops outside Kehl station. This will be slower (more stops) but has the advantage that it goes direct to Strasbourg city centre. From Strasbourg station you still need to get a tram or walk to the city centre.
3) Walk, it is ~5 Km and will take you about an hour ☺
Get the Europass 24H from the machine at the train station if you are starting from Offenburg. Don’t fool with a BW ticket. 9.60 for 1, 14.50 for 2.
Chris, thank you for suggesting 1 or 2 (definitely not doing 3!). I was wondering about 1 if I would have to get off the train and then back on. How would I validate if I do 1?
Stephen, that's a good suggestion! I never knew something like that existed. I will probably be going though to Triberg as well that day which is why I'm thinking the BW makes sense.
Boba, I forgot about the validation. That is a French peculiarity, they don't stamp (validate) tickets for Germany trains. And as this is an "international" trip starting from a German station, I guess validation doesn't apply.
I assumed you would be doing some more than Offenburg to Kehl that day in order to justify the cost of your Baden-Württemberg ticket.
Yes more than Offenburg.
A bit confused. So I would have to get off the train to buy a ticket and then come back on the train quickly or just wait for the next train?
You just said you were coming from Offenburg, then you say you are coming through Triberg on the same day. Let me put it a little differently. Where are you waking up that day?
Boba, my suggestion (1) was for you to buy a ticket from Kehl to Strasbourg, but buy it at Offenburg station, or wherever you are starting that day. That way you don't have to get off the train in Kehl. You would need to find a manned ticket counter, and explain carefully what you wanted.
I'm not 100% positive on my plan.
I figure go to Strasbourg morning/early afternoon from Offenburg, and then go to Triberg returning to Offenburg.
With the help of stephen, looks like cheapest option is to buy the Europass 24h for 9.60 EUR out of the vending machine at Offenburg. That covers the Strasbourg Metropole area plus the entire TGO area on the German side. If you want to go to Triberg in the afternoon (seems like a lot of work) the Europass 24h covers as far as Hornberg. Then it is a 4.10 EUR ticket from Hornberg to Triberg each way. Total transportation spending for the day, 17.80 EUR. You can buy the Hornberg-Triberg rt tickets in the morning when you buy the Europass 24h.
Can't find Europass 24h info in English, but it is here in German if you can use Google Translate.

Edit - Actually, if you go to Triberg, you will have to buy bus tickets from the train station to the actual town up the hill. That is a 1 zone VSB ticket, 4.40 EUR for a day ticket to go up and back. So add to the 17.80 EUR, giving 22.20 transport cost.
I'm short on time :(
Basically figured spent some day in Strasbourg for breakfast, see Petite France, and go to the Cathedral, go to Triberg to do an easy short hike at the halls, go to House of 1000 Clocks to buy clocks for family, eat cake, Black Forest Museum (maybe), and then head back.
I think it might just be easier buying the BW Ticket and doing the tram thing. If it's just a few Euros more for less work I would rather do that.
If you are going elsewhere in BW, then the 24H Mini would be vheaper. Both the 24H passes include transportation in Strasbourg
I cannot use Translate on a PDF.
Do I need the mini pass or the standard one??
Would I buy the Hornberg to Triberg ticket from the DB machine in Offenburg and validate in Offenburg?
I’m on the 10 05 train as we speak. I listened to you guys and bought the pass for 9.60 and set the validation for that time. I’m not sure though how to buy the tickets from hornburg to Triberg and back though.
You can cut and paste to:

Long and short, the MINI is only valid for Kehl district and Strasbourg. Section on the map inside the dotted blue line.
The Europass 24h covers the entire network shown on the map, blue and yellow areas.
You don't need to validate tickets in Germany. A regional ticket is valid for anytime for the date indicated on the ticket. Just have it in your possession if the conductor comes by to check. The Triberg bus tickets can be bought from the driver in cash, at least when I was there in 2015. Get off at Triberg Marktplatz. House of 1000 Clocks is just 200 feet or so further up the street.
Thanks Sam. How exactly do you copy and paste from a pdf? I was a moron yesterday. I bought a train ticket from Baden Baden to offenburg. It was too big to validate so I folded it and validated lol. No one came by to check despite my attempts to be honest.
You'll be arriving in Strasbourg now?
When you go back, you only have 6 minutes to change trains in Offenburg for the train to Triberg. You might try to get on the train in Offenburg and talk to the conductor and see if you can buy an extension, otherwise, you'll have to get off the train at Hornberg and buy a ticket out of the DB Automat. There also happens to be a bus at Hornberg to Triberg Marktplatz today at 16:00. It goes from Hornberg Post. DB shows an 8 minute walk from Hornberg station.
Its "fait d'acomplis". Don't worry about translating anything now. Enjoy the day.
Weird I replied earlier. I had a busy day! Did Triberg And strousburg back to offenburg and now back to strousburg for dinner. Making everyday count! You guys saved me money so ty. In Triberg I took the waterfall express and back I caught the city bus.
Alles in Ordung. Good to hear.
