B&B in the Koblenz / Bacharach area

Any recommendations of a good B&B in this area? We will be driving north after arriving in Frankfurt and would like to start our vacation off with a nice B&B before heading to Spa, Belgium for the Formula 1 race.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Kim

Define B&B. Small German hotels, pensions, etc almost always have breakfast, so they could be considered B&Bs. Or do you mean a true B&B, a Privatzimmer (room in a private home).

I stayed in a Privatzimmer in Boppard in 2004, but the owners never spoke English, even when I struggled with German. Would that be a problem for you?

There are lots of small hotels with breakfast in St. Goar. I've never stayed in any, but I would recommend them. (German hotels are almost always very good. I've never had a bad room in Germany.)

In Bacharach, I would recommend Im Malerwinkel. I've never stayed there either, but I've seen the outside and the setting is beautiful - and it's far away from the noise of the train tracks. Some on this board have stayed there. I've never heard anything negative about it.

If you don't mind staying on the Mosel, I have stayed here and recommend it highly. It is a true B&B. The owners, who live downstairs, are Dutch and speak excellent English.

In my opinion, Bacharach and Koblenz are not the same hotel market. It's true they are connected by good, frequent train service, as well as KD boats in high season. We stayed in Andernach, at Alte Kanzlei, which seemed like a nice family owned hotel with Parking-We left the car there. We didn't care for any of the Koblenz hotels we researched.

We have stayed at Maelerwinkel (sp) in Bacharach. It was very nice and clean. Huge dining room for breakfast. It was in 2008.

Kim,

I'm not sure what criteria you have in mind for "good". If you want clean, basic accommodations in the centre of Bacharach, I'd recommend Pension Lettie. It's not a large facility but the rooms are comfortable and Lettie is a wonderful host.

If you'd like to consider a more conventional hotel that also provides breakfast, have a look at Hotel Kranenturm. I should stress that I didn't find the noise of the trains to be a problem when staying there.

If you'd like a more "unusual vacation experience", you could consider the Burg Stahleck Hostel, which is on a hill above Bacharach. If you'll have a car, access won't be a problem. It's located in a Castle and they also provide breakfast AFAIK. It's nice to sit on the patio with a "cool one" and admire the magnificent view.

I can recommend the Altkölnischer Hof hotel in Bacharach. We spent a few nights there. Comfortable room, nice bathroom, large breakfast buffet in a lovely wood paneled dining area, elevator. Our room had a huge balcony overlooking the Main Street. No train noise as it is located away from the tracks in the town center. I can also suggest the Cafe Rusticana across the street. A charming restuarant with nice meals and an endearingly friendly hostess who made us feel like guests rather than customers. When a woman at a table next to ours asked about the cream dispensers, or some such table accoutrement, the owner took one from a cupboard and insisted she accept it as a gift. Food notwithstanding, we returned another evening. Safe travels.

I've also stayed at Im Malerwinkel in Bacharach on two separate trips. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The location is not only convenient but also very pretty. They have parking spaces available in a lot next to the hotel, too.
