Austria vs Germany for Zugspite?

Does it matter if I go to Zugspite from Garmisch-Part., or from Ehrwald? I do not ski- only going for the view.

Is one less crowded at this time of year (feb), or is one easier to access? I am on a time limit- so is one a tad faster?

Can I pre-buy tickets to the top?

"Does it matter if I go to Zugspite from Garmisch-Part., or from Ehrwald?" No.

"Is one less crowded at this time of year (feb), or is one easier to access?" Both are filled with skiers. The cable cars on each side are faster than the Zugspitzebahn, though.

"Can I pre-buy tickets to the top?" There's no advantage even if you could.

It depends on how you are getting to the base (Tal) station.

The Zugspitzbahn train leaves adjacent to the German Rail station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You change from the regular train to the cog train in Grainau. The fastest way to the top is to get off the cog train in Eibsee and take the cable car up to the top of the mountain.

The cable car station in Ehrwald is a distance from the train station. There are buses periodically during the day. I don't think the schedule is real wall coordinated with the train.

If you arrive in GaPa with a Bayern-Ticket, you might get a discount for the Zugspitzbahn ticket (it used to say so, but I no longer see the discount mentioned).

Ah- forgot to mention that I am arriving by rental car from Salzburg- so it appears on the map that either city is easy to reach via driving.

Am reading Rick's tour book- it looks as if I can skip the cogwheel train portion and just drive to the cable car in Eibsee. Is that true?

Is Zugspitze worth the stop- or would you suggest I spend the morning in Salzburg and tour a Salt Mine?

Whether it is worth a stop depends on the weather. We went to the Austria side. They have a big screen where you catch the cable car that displays the weather currently and the prediction. It was socked in when we got there and we saw no hope for clearing. We disappointingly decided not to spend the big bucks to get up there.

Ride from the Austrian side is cheaper than from the German side. But view from the German side is better - however, once you're at the top the view is obviously the same anyway.
