Augustiner in Munich

Hello!

I will be in Munich for only a day this summer before flight home... (me and two teen boys, friend and her 2 teens (they haven;t been)).... My family has been to Munich about 3 other times. We are staying near the train station and want to grab lunch or dinner near the station (we may try to make it to Dachau, so maybe want to stay close).

Way back in 2000 we ate at a great Augustiner and loved it - it was somewhere near the station.... I see the brewery on one side and the beer garden on the other. They both get good reviews. I can;t remember if it was one of those. Actual outdoor beer garden is very appealing though....

I just worry because last trip we ended up at another Augustiner - I think it was Zum Augustiner in the main pedestrian area. Worst food ever, horrid service, just overall awful experience.... but that one gets generally good reviews too. But it was awful. And I generally do not complain about restaurants!

I don't want to waste one of two meals in Munich! I know a couple other places that I like, but they may be too far logistically for us this time.

Thoughts? Or recommendations?

THANKS!
Kim

I've been to Hofbrauhaus a few times. Very fun, love the atmosphere and music. Quite touristy, but I consider a "must do". Food not so much. I've eaten at Ausgustinerkeller on the Marienplatz a few times and enjoyed the food and staff. Perhaps you had an isolated experience? I've also eaten at the Augustinerkeller near the train station. It was also very atmospheric with good food. it has a large outdoor beer garden that looked like it could be very fun, but I was there in January.

We were in Munich in 2015. All of our meals were good - we too had surly service at one of the Augustiner's. By far the best food and beer was at the Spatenhaus by the Residenz. I would also go back to the beer garden at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden and the cafeteria in the park where the 1972 Olympics were held. We ate a couple of good pizzas at the Italian restaurant a few doors down from the Blauer Bock hotel - not Eataly.

I have eaten at 2 Augustiner sponsored restaurants in the pedestrian zone, Zum Augustiner on Neuhauser Str near Karlstor and Augustiner am Dom near Frauenkirche. I loved the beer but found the food only ok. I have heard the Augustiner Keller is better but I have not made it there yet.

If you are going to buy a MVV group ticket to visit Dachau, you might consider recommendations away from train station. I liked Paulaner im Tal but I ordered fish, not the standard in Munich.

We have been to the augustine keller every time we visit Munich. It's a short walk from the train station and well worth the walk. We did use a taxi once and it was 10 euros but it's such a short walk that we usually walk. You will love the food was well as the ambience.

Yes, keep in mind that there are probably a dozen Augustiner restaurants in Munich. The one you are looking for is Augustiner-Keller.

Basically, if you are standing in the station looking at the rows of tracks heading out of the station, find the exit to the right, and once outside go to the left, it is down a couple blocks. Google it, and it will make sense.

As you recalled, there is a large beer garden, and then a restaurant, actually several really. The beer garden is a more limited menu, the restaurant more formal, but still beer hall. Here is their website: https://www.augustinerkeller.de/home/?L=1

I really like the Augustiner-Keller biergarten. The atmosphere is really nice, under the trees is lovely, there is always room, the food is tasty. I find the food is a bit less greasy and not as salty as others. Super convenient to the train and tram.

You're thinking of the Augustiner Brewery restaurant (Augustiner Braustuben) recommended by RS, and to date it is the best Bavarian meal I've had in Munich.

That said, the biergarten (Augustiner Keller) is lovely, and I've spent many hours hanging out there, but the food is not as good. If you want a proper schweinhaxe (pork knuckle), go to the brewery. They even have a small outdoor balcony, so maybe call for a reservation and ask if you can sit outside.

There's a few other Augustiners in the tourist zone and I've never eaten at them but reviews show them as being hit or miss. The brewery restaurant is the real deal. I don't think you'll be disappointed. But it's not like the Keller biergarten is awful, for biergarten food it's surprisingly good, too.
